WATCH out Jess – there’s a new cat in town and he’s not very friendly.

Postman Andy Cox says he came face to face with a panther during his round in Finham last Saturday.

The 41-year-old claims he spotted the beast behind a metal fence in Alfriston Road at about 7.30am before making a sharp exit from the area.

And Andy was so concerned about the sighting that he reported it to Royal Mail bosses – despite enduring plenty of mickey taking from his colleagues.

“One came up to me a couple of days ago and said he had been chased by a velociraptor,” Andy, of Radford, said.

“And I’ve assured them that my eyesight is perfect with my glasses on. There was absolutely no mistaking what it was.”

Andy, who has worked as a postman for six years, was just 20 minutes into his round when he says he came across the beast.

He took a couple of steps towards it to get a closer look but when the beast spotted him it hissed in his direction and sped off.

Startled – and concerned that the animal might be racing round the fence to make Andy’s acquaintance – he completed his round in record time.

“I just saw something out of the corner of my eye,” Andy added. “It was this big black cat, about 4ft long and 2ft tall. My first thought was that this was not something you usually see. I looked at it and it looked straight back at me.

“I wondered if it might be some daft prank, maybe a dummy that some kids had set up. So I took a couple of steps towards it and it hissed at me before shooting off.

“It was quick – very very quick. I turned around and went in the other direction. I couldn’t finish my round quickly enough.”

Royal Mail bosses confirmed Andy had reported the sighting, stating: “Mr Cox has made people at his delivery office aware of a brief sighting of what he has described as a large black panther-like animal.”

It’s by no means the first time a big cat has been spotted in the area – although sightings are more common in Warwickshire.

In the 1990s the Beast of Claverdon, suspected by many to be a European Lynx, attacked pets and killed farmyard animals.

And later in the decade pupils at Coundon Court School were told to stay off playing fields because a panther was spotted on the prowl in the area.

The Beast of Allesley was spotted several more times before it went off the radar in 1998. Further sightings were reported in Rugby and Polesworth.

I do believe these cats exist in Britain. Panthers, Lynx cats and Lions soon roaming britain. Soon to be called Africa Britain, don't go to the savannah come to the uk. Tour guides included. I also think (a bit of the track), zoos should include Lions chasing Zebras etc to create more realism and good entertainmetn for kids .

The OP article sounds like if someone has bought an " exotic " pet " " .

I'm surprised our Council haven't turned some of the Estates into Safari Tours - " Do not feed the Chavs " , " Do not wind your windows down " , Sound your horn if they get aggressive and a Ranger will shoot him / her " .
