Post chiefs spent £65million on management consultants while slashing 50,000 jobs.

The Royal Mail paid £1,484 an hour on average between 2003 and 2008 to advisers, a Mirror Freedom of Information request has revealed. The cash would have paid the salary of 4,882 posties.

Among the firms to benefit was Mind Gym, which made more than £1million giving managers "mental workouts" on conflict handling.

Brian Scott, national officer for union Unite, said: "Our members want to see the Royal Mail investing in post offices and keeping them in our communities, not handing over much-needed cash to consultants."

A Royal Mail spokesman said the consultants helped take the firm from near bankruptcy to financial stability.

That is truly shocking. What an appalling misuse of funds.

I thought the accepted wisdom was that consultants only told you what you already knew while relieving you of a king's ransom.

if my maths is correct that could have given 160,000 postman a £350 bonus.

that could have given incentive if set against achievable targets for a lot of the workforce and bought a lot of goodwill .

Let me get this straight...Unite/CMA are whining that overpaid underworked "consultants" are taking money out of Royal Mail rather than investing in post offices and keeping them in our communities.

OK then Brian Scott, national officer for union Unite tell us how much your managers took out of the business in bonuses over the same 5 year period.
