A Craigneuk man has been treated in hospital for a head injury after he was seriously assaulted in his garden.

At about 4.50am, the 36-year-old postal worker was leaving his home in the North Lanarkshire town's Heathery Road to go to work when he was attacked by a man.

The attacker then got into a Transit style van which was driven from the scene, possibly by another man.

Police and ambulance services were called to the scene and the injured man was taken to Wishaw General Hospital to be treated for a head injury. He has since been released and is recovering at home.

The suspect is described as a white male, aged 20 - 35 years, five feet eight inches tall and with a medium build. He was dressed in blue jeans and a jacket, and had a scarf over his face.

DC Allan Richmond from Strathclyde Police said: "We are still making enquiries into the motive behind this attack, and would appeal to anyone who knows anything about this to come forward.

"Whilst this happened very early in the morning, there may have been other people going to work or taxi drivers in the area who maybe saw something of significance. Likewise someone may have seen the Transit van in the area.

"I appreciate most people wouldn't pay attention to a passing van at this time in the morning, however I would encourage members of the public if they saw anything at all to please contact us."
