USPS Nation's Oldest Postal Worker Retires At Age 95

After 37 years at the U.S. Post Office, 95-year-old Chester Reed is finally calling it quits.

He has seen thousands of addresses over the years but for nearly four decades, the San Bernardino Processing and Distribution Center is where Reed has felt most at home.

"I could enjoy this 365 days a year," he said.

Now five years shy of the century mark, Reed is handling a new parcel - leaving his post, shipping out and addressing retirement.

"Why'd I stay here so long? I guess nobody else would have me," he said.

After serving in the Air Force for 25 years, Reed continued working for the government as a postal service employee.

He's never used a sick day because he never had to.

In fact, he accumulated nearly 4,000 hours of sick leave.

To him, it's never been just a 9 to 5 job.

This week, Reed will retire as the oldest U.S. Postal Service employee.

"It's the best job I've ever had," he said.

He isn't stamping out work because he's tired, rather he's eager to travel and hang glide.

His co-workers say they're sending off a very special delivery out into the world.

According to co-worker Mary Brunkhorst, "(He's) very special but not fragile. He's a tough old bird this Chester is."
