Consultation period runs until August 10



Royal Mail have launched a public consultation over plans to reopen a Post Office in Stopsley.

Stopsley Post Office, in Hitchin Road, closed in November 2008, due to the resignation of the subpostmaster, meaning the premises were withdrawn for Post Office use.

But now a new agent has been identified just 200 yards away at Henderson's News, providing an opportunity to incorporate Post Office services into the long-established retail store.

A Post Office spokesman said: "It is our intention to continue to provide a Post Office service to our customers in the local community and since the closure we have been exploring a number of options that would enable us to do this.

"The establishment of this Post Office local service presents the best possible solution to allow us to Post Office service in Stopsley.
"Customers will benefit from a new, open-plan counter and have access to a wide range of Post Office products and services. "

A six-week public consultation began yesterday, June 29, and runs until Tuesday, August 10. The proposed reopening would be on a trial basis for a year and dependent on customer usage.

Luton Borough Council leader, Councillor Hazel Simmons, welcomed the plans. She said: "We hope that this development will be welcomed by local people, and I would encourage everyone to respond."
