No, your Duty time should still start when you get into work. Taking the van Home is a perk, and shouldn't be considered to be part of your Duty. Otherwise, it wouldn't be fair, considering the varying travel times that some have. It could be as little as 10 minutes down the road, or an hours commute.POSTMAN wrote:Now there's an interesting thought by guv.
Say your start time is 6,but you have to get in the van at 5:30 to get to work, there's 30mins there and another 30mins back, that is an hr!
Then there is the 15mins van check every morning that is a conduct issue if it is not done and stuff is wrong with the van, who's going to help us with that?
And what if somethings wrong with it?
I can just imagine me mrs in her winceyette and curlers helping me out

I thought a lot of posties were objecting to working in vans, if thats so then why are you helping RM out by taking them home, at our place they told us we were having them but cos there's no place to park them overnight we would have to take them home, we refused so now unless they spend money on somewhere for them to be parked they can't bring them in.

How would drivers feel about picking others up in the morning?
Parking space will be an issue with the new vans.....it would save members money.....it's win/win almost....just a thought.

Tbf though some of the car user would jump at the chance to take one home. But you're right about the van checks, considering that they should be done before you take it out on the roads, and not when you arrive in the van. What we need is an agreement, which states that RM will pay you the 15 mins for checking it before you set off from Home. You could, for example sign something to state that you completed the checks when you arrive at work.
If it is Classed as a perk then the Taxman would want to Tax you as such, would'nt he....OVER TO FISHTANKNo, your Duty time should still start when you get into work. Taking the van Home is a perk, and shouldn't be considered to be part of your Duty.

Well you only need to take a look up and down your street to see we are not alone in taking the vans home.
Many companies do this now because it saves space and more importantly from our point of view it saves employees money.
I don't see a problem with it as long as a proper risk assessment is done and there is no comeback on members if some knobhead damages or steals the van.
If this was the worst part about park&loop i'd be delighted.

You won't pay any tax if you take a CDV home.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Seen that Postman
What i was trying to get at is if they claim we don't start work till we get to the DO, then it is Private use as such till we arrive. Now if they say no you are working as soon as you get in tne van to come to work, Then as was said earlier
they should start to pay you as soon as you leave home.

Re: Car sharing. Can you take the car home?
I'm not sure why it's not taxed as a perk. But my previous Employer used to let a couple of the lads take pool cars Home, because they didn't have cars of their own (they were 18). They never paid any tax on them, and the link that Postman provided confirms it. But you can't possibly be considered to be on your Duty, whilst you're commuting. That simply doesn't make sense. And it'd be incredibly unfair too.
