Workers at Cockermouth Post Office, in the Co-op store on Station Street, kept the branch trading despite the devastation wrought by last November’s deluge.
Their “outstanding community and team ethic” has been rewarded with a Post Office ‘Best of the Best’ award.
Branch manager Emma Jewell and counter clerks Tracey Campbell and Jan Hawes received the prize at a ceremony in London.
The branch only closed when the mountain rescue team arrived in dinghies to rescue the staff from floodwater.
And they battled on to make their way to work in the weeks afterwards despite the huge difficulties caused by the loss of bridges and disruption public transport links in the area.
Anne Clarke, post office operations manager at The Co-operative Group, said: “The whole team at Cockermouth, both the Post Office and shop staff, have always been committed to serving the local community but they went beyond the call of duty during the floods last year.
“We are extremely proud of them all and they thoroughly deserve this award for their outstanding dedication to serving the local community.”
