Brighton postman shot on his round

A brave postman was shot in the back while doing his round.

Royal Mail worker James Macdonald, 30, was hit beneath his ribs as he delivered a parcel to the Joyful Whippet pub in Steepdown Road, Lancing.

The 30-year-old collapsed in pain after being fired at from behind as he got off his bike in the pub car park - but then got back on his bike and then finished delivering his letters.

Community leaders spoke of their concern over the incident and called for residents to report anything they knew about the gunman.

Children were playing in the sunshine at 11.45am on Saturday when Mr Macdonald was shot by what police believe was an air rifle.

He doubled over in pain after the pellet left a bleeding red wound, but he declined the offer of an ambulance, instead choosing to finish his round.

Police are trying to determine whether the shot was fired from a house, garden, or car.

David Simmons, Adur District Council's cabinet member for community safety who is also a ward councillor for the area, said: “As a community we need to stand up and try to prevent this sort of thing.

“We need to do everything we can to prevent this happening again and someone being more seriously hurt."

Mr Macdonald was given the Postman of the Year Award in recognition of his charity work organising the annual Heroes Run in Brighton and founding his own charity, Passingiton.

Anyone with any information about the attack should call 0845 6070999 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

He obviously knows the consequences of management bullying if he cuts off. Hope hes not at work today.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets
