A thieving Carlisle postman who stole DVDs and computer games from parcels he should have delivered on his rounds has been jailed for three months.

Alan Paterson, 29, was snared in a Royal Mail CCTV sting after almost eight years working as a trusted postie.

His employer became suspicious when Paterson regularly turned up early for shifts and offered colleagues the latest releases on DVD and computer games.

He stole at least 30 films and 10 Xbox games between July 2009 and February this year before being caught when he opened dummy packages planted by the Royal Mail on his delivery round.

Paterson admitted two charges of stealing parcels and another of interfering with a parcel on February 12. He was jailed for 84 days by Carlisle magistrates who heard that when he was approached by investigators on his way home from work, he had a stolen game hidden in his trousers.

They found 30 stolen DVDs when they searched the home he shares with his parents in Henderson Road. Anthony Wilson, prosecuting for Royal Mail, said that under questioning, Paterson had readily admitted the thefts. He said he had debt and domestic problems and that nothing ever went right for him.

Mr Wilson said: “The defendant was asked whether there was anything he wished to add or clarify and said that he was really sorry and had been very, very stupid.”

Most of the DVDs he stole were from packages that were wrongly addressed and should have been sent back to retailers. He targeted Jiffy-style bags and DVD packages.

Paterson, who has a young child, told magistrates he was ashamed but suggested he would have carried on stealing if he hadn’t been caught.

A Royal Mail spokesman said after the hearing: “Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women, who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.”

Well it's a start. But why can't they give longer sentences, which would be a real deterrant?

That was probably just a ruse, to get a lighter sentence. Remember: The better the sob story, the better your chances of getting off lightly.

I've no problem with people being able to provide details of mitigating circumstances. But some of them are just so OTT, that I'm amazed that Judges keep falling for them.

There may well be lots of other s**t going on in his life that isn't reported.
Obviously I don't condone his actions but it could be he has just split up with his partner, may be having difficulty getting access and has had to go back to live with his parents.
His self-esteem has taken a bad knock and to try and get in with his workmates he is selling them DVD's to make himself look big.
Could be he has just lost his wife. His whole world has collapsed and he has done something really stupid as a cry for help.
Don't be too harsh when you only have half the facts.

worked with this guy and seriously he was the most hated liar you could ever imagine.sob stories ..where to begin.half the office was supposed to have bullied him because they laughed at his lies,then the excuse was he was sexually abused by his dad,who he went to stay with on a weekend still!oh yeah his girlfriend died,then came back to life .she'd made it up because she wanted to make him jealous.seriously this fool was one twisted boy and management was informed of him a long time ago about how he couldn't be trusted.i'm sure he'll have been stealing items for a lot longer than was reported and 3 months is way too short.
