Free Press readers are today being urged to show their support for our campaign to save Doncaster's Royal Mail sorting office from the sack.
We want as many readers as possible to fill in our Save Our Sorters coupon and show Royal Mail that we, the people of Doncaster, believe it is vital the mail centre remains in our borough.
The firm has announced plans to shut the site and transfer work to Sheffield by 2012. It says the move will reduce costs and improve efficiency but has caused outrage across the borough.
Union chiefs believe the move will leave 430 staff with uncertain futures. Many also fear it will increase unemployment and damage the town's economy.
Doncaster MPs Rosie Winterton and Caroline Flint were among the first people to back the Save Our Sorters campaign launched by the Free Press last week.
They have both pledged to return their coupons, which, along with the replies from other readers, we will send to Royal Mail.
Miss Winterton, whose Doncaster Central constituency covers the sorting office site in Middle Bank, said: "I am backing the campaign by the Free Press to Save Our Sorters.
"Having a Doncaster sorting office is not only good for the economy - as it protects jobs - but ensures we remain one of the best communications hubs in the country.
"I am sending my coupon to the Free Press. I encourage other readers to do the same."
Don Valley MP Ms Flint added: "I'm sending back my coupon and I hope everybody will. Doncaster's got a good case for mail sorting to remain here.
"We are right to argue that Doncaster has great communication links and is well located in relation to the motorway network."
Elected mayor Peter Davies also encouraged readers to send us their coupons. He added: "It is outrageous that Royal Mail are deciding whether to move from Doncaster to Sheffield."

We had all the same arguments at Crewe, and the MP's, the councillors, chambers of commerce all pledged their support and wrote letters on our behalf and attended meetings. BUT THAT IS ALL THEY DID. Listened, nodded, and agreed.
RM just happily ignored everything and carried right on with their bogus consultation, and now Warrington MC is up and running and work is flying out of Crewe, 5 weeks from the doors being locked for the final time.
Wish everyone the best of luck, but honestly I do not believe anything short of direct action will affect RM's thinking. They want to burn the ground of property and eventually people, and the last govt and this are largely in favour if not the driving force behind this. And of course why is all this happening? EU postal services directives.
Just be prepared, you'll get lots of support in words from people, and lots of letters written, even early day motions presented to the commons, but it is just that, WORDS. And RM doesn't give a sh*t, so don't waste time pinning false hopes on this sort of thing and waiting for a positive outcome to MP's letters and early day motions, and petitions presented to Ministers, do it by all means but be prepared that it will take nothing short of a miracle and a whole lot more...
