Royal Mail donates 3,000 computers to Computer Aid

The Royal Mail is donating 3,000 used computers to IT charity Computer Aid International to be sent to disadvantaged children in remote areas of Chile.

The children will learn to browse the web, word-processing, and search for information online, making it easier for them to get jobs in the future.

The machines will be refurbished by Computer Aid, extending their life by another three to four years. Every PC gives 60 children the chance to train up to a vocational level of IT literacy.

Tony Roberts, chief executive of Computer Aid, said, "By donating its PCs to Computer Aid, Royal Mail Group is playing a vital role in enabling disadvantaged and developing communities to improve their education and employment prospects.


"Providing these children in Chile with the ability to interact with modern information technologies offers them a genuine opportunity to break the circle of poverty within their communities. We urge other organisations to follow Royal Mail Group's lead; donating equipment for re-use is free, easy and offers organisations guarantees with compliance in e-waste legislation."

Computer Aid International has sent more than 160,000 PCs to schools, hospitals and community projects in more than 100 countries such as Rwanda, Chile and Zambia.
