318 should have been phased out by now and their replacement the "Walk Log" does not at our place. However, the work plan does.

elverly, you do not have to have your break not long after you have started work.
You can take half at the DO and the other half when you want to,we take our 2nd half at my place at the end of our duty.Or you can also take it in one block.
But tbf you must have some kind of work plan or a time where your office normally takes it shouldn't you?
You are being had over by your manager and your rep (re you lose it if you don't take it before you go out).

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Well on the surface there does seem some spare capacity if you are leaving office at 9 and say at 1st del point at 9.20,3.30 delivery takes you to 12.50 add 20 min break and that delivery finished by 13.10.
You have stated your finishing time is 14.20 so even with a genourous 20 min pouch off or a return to office you are left with a 50 min shortfall.
So from the outside some opportunity for lapsing does look possible and that is why the DOM is going for it.
I can see why your office would find it unpopular and not like the idea of lapsing and good on them for "doing the job properly' but I feel it may be a losing battle.
Only thing is don't know size of your office and no of duties to know what sort of impact lapsing 2 duties would have.
The only thing maybe worth trying but I think it unlikely to hold is sticking to a 3.30 del span and once you have done that return to office to work till time.
But I found once staff get faced with that option lapsing doesn't seem that bad and a better option.
office size is 37 no" Duties is 31 so lapsing 2 walks every day i think is taking the piss, with all this crap going on with the D2D

So if every duty did lapsing you are looking at around 40 mins each when you take in travelling time into it
A bit tight yes but possible on times given
What it also depends on of course is you say most of your office leaves by 9am but how much is this due to people starting early and using private cars and by these actions creating the time to allow lapsing
Going by the topic I guess some of your office did start early and use pcod
If by doing the job properly your office eliminates the spare time for lapsing then it should not be done but you will sill have to live with later finishes
Now if your office can get used to this than great it is the best way but my experience is people are he'll bent on finishing early and will find it impossible in their minds to work till their time
And though it's a trick played by RM often if your office decided that they would accept lapsing 1 duty to go back to leaving office at 9am your Dom will accept it
All of the above is of course not the official or perfect way but the reality in most offices as long as the staff are asked by the Rep want they want or will accept and a decision or deal is done on majority rule
Good luck with whatever your office decides
This ain't no baseball game, you get only one chance and you blew it.

Thanks for the link to Directgov, Teebs regarding rest breaks. I am part time so only get 30 minutes. The good bit is that not only must the employer give the rest breaks set out in the working time regulations, they must also ensure that health and safety is not put at risk. By trying to get us to take meal break immediately we start work, they must be putting health at risk, if not safety, because they are then expecting us to work more than the six hours at a stretch. (Do 7 hours per day with 30 minute meal break, so if this is taken immediately, then expected to work 6hours 30 minutes without a break). So I will be notifying them of their responsibilities in no uncertain terms and I think the cwu should also be making it quite plain to senior management that this sort of abuse should stop immediately, and those like Dingo and GWP who seem to take offence at any justified criticism of the National Agreement, would gain far more friends within this Forum if they openly denounced these abuses.

Lincox,if you saw my posts about 2010 Agreement when it was first announced I was quite critical of it and certainly didn't sing it's praises but it is here now and it has to be worked with, not sure what meal reliefs has got to do with though.
I have never said people should or can be forced to take full allowance of meal relief at beginnining of shift or before they go out on delivery.
What I have said is that it is reasonable for people to take part of their break before they go out on delivery and don't understand all the objections over that issue.
If you are on a 30 hour contract I would presume you do your own prep which I would think is at least 1 hour 30 mins, after doing this then bagging up what is wrong with having a 10 min break before going out on delivery then having 20 min during delivery(or at end).
If you are being forced to take your full break entitlement as soon as you walk through the door I find this strange and WRONG.

No it aint.
The word is 'isn't' if you must contract, but 'working properly' is exactly the same as working to rule except with a different tag. If there is any difference its one of speed but otherwise they both include doing no more than you have to and within the rules.
Sorry wrong.

Working properly is an individuals choice. Working to rule is a recognised industrial action (which the CWU dislike) by a group.

IN RM as the CWU don't like WTRs it can cause problems as without their backing and a properly constituted ballot WTR are illegal and workers taking part can be sacked.

If you decide to "Do the job properly" dont use that term or WTR when talking with management, just actually come in on time, refuse offers of overtime, take 1 bag with you (follow weight matrix), follow all H&S rules etc etc etc - they will get the message in the end.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the contraction "ain't" your wrong. You are right in your choice of an alternative but wrong that "ain't" should not be used in this context".

Definition: Ain't
Definition
A contraction for are not and am not; also used for is not. [Colloq. or illiterate speech].[Websters].
Source: Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913)

Date "Ain't" was first used in popular English literature: sometime before 1647.

BTW its not from Wikipedia :left:
don't really matter though does it

Surely GBP3 with this type of manual job, it should be the individual who decides when he/she is in need of a break, and not down to the manager to decide when it suits, and in particular when it is down to failure of the mail getting through. The regulations also say THEY MUST ALSO ENSURE THAT YOUR HEALTH AND SAFETY IS NOT PUT AT RISK. THIS MEANS THAT YOUR EMPLOYER MIGHT HAVE TO GIVE YOU MORE THAN THE AMOUNT SET OUT IN THE REGULATIONS, IF THIS REDUCES A HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK.. If they want to impose a break early on then they should also take note of this part of the legislation. You also say that you see no problem splitting a 30 minute break into a 10 minute and 20 minute. Again that should be the choice of the individual because the regulations state THE BREAK MUST BE IN ONE BLOCK. ie the employer does not have the choice of splitting that block.

Lincox here are some of my thoughts and opinions only.
1,If you work in a factory in a manual job or on a production line you can't take your breaks when you want.
2,Also if you work in above you usually get breaks in 3 blocks.
3,CWU pushed for members to take a break before going out on delivery.
4,Members were/are going against HS regulations by not having break during duty but taking it of the end.
5,I am sure we get more than the minimum meal relief time.
Now as I said if you are being forced to take full break either as soon as you enter the door or before you go out on delivery everyday that is wrong and you have a genuine grievance but IF you have the hump because you can no longer take your break at the end of duty and finish earlier then you are totally contradicting yourself.
I DID SAY IF.

I entirely accept your point that break should not be left until the end of shift for health and safety reasons. I do not think that working in a factory can any way be related to our job, as even if you are on your feet most of the day, you are not walking eight miles a day or more day in day out, after already having been stood at least two hours sorting, and for that reason alone I believe the individual should say when he is in need of a break.
