With England’s participation in the 2010 World Cup very much under way, former England star Jamie Redknapp has teamed up with Royal Mail to create his very own set of one off charity stamps.
The auction, which kicks off on the very same weekend as the nineteenth World Cup in South Africa and ends on Father’s Day, will raise funds for the children’s charity Barnardo’s to help the most vulnerable children across the UK.
The limited edition set of First Class Smilers® stamps feature an exclusive and personal family image of an 11 year old Jamie, alongside his father and current Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp at their family home in Dorset.
Jamie, who played 17 international matches for England and whose cousin Frank Lampard is representing his country in South Africa this year, chose the photo as his own special representation of what fatherhood most means to him.
The exclusive sheet of Smilers stamps, which will be personally signed by Jamie Redknapp, are available to bid on a seven day auction at http://www.eBay.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; from Sunday 13th June, with the listing due to close on Father’s Day (20th June) at 7pm.
Smilers are a unique way to personalise your post, by combining one of your own photos with a Royal Mail stamp.
Former England footballer Jamie Redknapp, who has donated his image for the charity auction said: "I’m really glad to be involved in such a positive initiative, and be able to support a fantastic cause. The image that I have chosen is one of my favourite personal family photos.
"It sums up our shared love of football and how much we’ve always supported each other throughout our careers. As a father of two boys myself, I know how important the role of a dad is within a family, and this photo really symbolises my own feelings."
The charity auction follows on the back of several successful Smilers initiatives from Royal Mail in recent years, although Jamie is the first footballer to take part in such a campaign.
Previous stars from the field of entertainment including Helena Christensen, Elizabeth Hurley, Rod Stewart, Rankin and Pearl Lowe have all donated never before seen images to create exclusive Smilers stamps, helping to raise in excess of £25,000 for some fantastic causes over the last two years.
All money raised on Father’s Day will be donated to Barnardo’s Royal Mail Group’s charity partner and the UK’s leading children’s charity which works with more than 100,000 children, young people and their families each year.
Barnardo’s delivers specialised support via its 383 local services for the UK’s most vulnerable children exposed to domestic violence, poverty, drug misuse, crime, homelessness and much more.
Martin Field, Barnardo’s Director of Fundraising, is delighted about the charity initiative; "It is fantastic that in the middle of such an eagerly anticipated World Cup, we have a high profile football family on board for our latest exciting campaign in partnership with Royal Mail.
"We are incredibly grateful to Jamie for donating this special and personal image, and the money raised will make a real difference to the children and young people we support throughout the UK."
Julietta Edgar from Royal Mail said: "As the World Cup kicks off its fantastic to have two such famous football faces featuring on these Smiler stamps. We really hope they will capture people’s imagination and that they will encourage football fans to get bidding and raise valuable funds for our charity partner Barnardo’s."

Would of sold a lot more if his wife was on them.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Isn't his dad accused of some iffy dealings while at Portsmouth?

He's not designed a stamp, just a label attached to a stamp.

It's at times like this I really envy those people who are on hand stamping duties.
