CTC, the national cyclists' organisation, is running a campaign to stop Royal Mail's plans to phase out cycle delivery. Thanks to everyone who has already contacted us with support for the campaign. We put in an FOI request on 20th May asking Royal Mail for the following information about their plans to scrap of cycle delivery:

1) Any research, feasibility studies or cost analysis that was
undertaken in support of this decision?
2) Any risk analysis or health and safety studies undertaken in
support of this decision?
3) What is the timeline for implementing this decision?
4) Who is responsible for this process?

and it is certainly not simply a case of a straightforward switch into vans of those postmen and women who currently use cycles on delivery.

One thing i was going to do which perhaps you guys could do is get the info on cycle related accidents,how many,how bad ect
RM (Paul Tolhurst)claim that they are now dangerous for our staff.

We have seen an increase inaccidents linked to the use of cycles on busy road networks and in a number of cases these accidents result in major injury to our staff.

As far as I know, there is no evidence that cycling-related injuries at Royal Mail have gone up in recent years. That's something for another FOI request!

According to Royal Mail's 2008-9 Corporate Social Responsibility Report, these were the top five causes of on the job accidents at RM during that year:
10,073 (39%) Slips, trips & falls
5,086 (19%) Animals
3,746 (14%) Lifting & handling
3,694 (14%) Stepping on/striking against
1,067 (4%) Cycles
2,555 (10%) Other

You can see that cycling is a much smaller risk than, say, animals.

It is well-documented that the more cyclists there are in a given area, the lower the risk to each cyclist. It's called the Safety in Numbers effect. You can learn more about it here: http://www.ctc.org.uk/safetyinnumbers.

What will happen to the bicycles? I cant see RM putting them out to stud. Are there delivery bike rescue centres? Wont somebody PLEASE think of the BICYCLES!!

But its not all bad news.....
At least one old feller landed on his tyres and lives out the remainder of his days on a working farm museum in the Chilterns.
