Postmen claim they have been banned from flying England flag

Angry postal workers in Northampton say they have been told to remove England flags from their delivery vans and anywhere they may be seen by members of the public because of fears they may cause offence.

As England kicked off their World Cup campaign at the weekend, workers at the Crow Lane sorting office in Billing were told to remove flags from their vans and any offices where they could be seen by the public.

The company has said it has no problem with flags being displayed inside offices, but union leaders have said stopping postmen from attaching them where they might be seen by people is 'unpatriotic'.

The secretary of the Northamptonshire branch of the Communication Workers' Union, Mick Fitzmaurice, said: "We're being told it's fine to support your team, but you can't display a flag anywhere in public.

"It's a real shame, because the whole country's got football fever at the moment and this ruling just seems a bit of a nonsense.

"I don't think people are going to be offended by seeing an England flag, if anything I would say people expect Royal Mail to be flying it, especially when we're out working in the community."

The mother of another Northampton postman said she was shocked when she was told by her son he had been ordered to remove the flag from his van.

She said: "He was told they weren't allowed to have flags on show because they might upset people.

"He was really upset, but he took it off the van and he's put it on his car now."

A spokesman for Royal Mail would not discuss the flying of flags from vans, but she said the company supported the England team.

She said: "We want our people to have every opportunity to follow the World Cup and there are flags on display in Royal Mail offices up and down the country and there'll be live radio commentary on the PA system during matches.
