ROYAL Mail have failed to win a stamp of approval from one East Kilbride teenager after they delivered a birthday card which was almost completely destroyed.

Sara Craig, 15, and her dad Derek have spent two months battling with Royal Mail over what they claim is ‘appalling service’.

Sara’s birthday card from her uncle was delivered to her home in pieces in a Royal Mail bag.

To add to her frustration, the £20 note contained inside the card was torn and the serial number was missing, leaving the teenager unable to spend it.

Derek was so angry he contacted Royal Mail and sent them a claim form, along with the badly damaged card and cash.

Disappointed with their response, which arrived three weeks later, he wrote to the company to reiterate his point.

He then received a further reply which stated the company take every failure seriously. Six first class stamps were provided as compensation.

Derek said: “My daughter likes to keep her cards and she was heartbroken.

“She doesn’t care about the money. She is more upset about the card and total lack of consideration by Royal Mail.

“The card was so badly damaged Royal Mail had put it in a bag to keep it together. It seemed however, someone had attempted to stick the card back together with tape first.

“I am frustrated and disappointed at Royal Mail’s attitude towards their customers. The stamps they sent us as compensation should have come with a warning stating ‘use at your own risk’.”

He added: “Royal Mail have shown appalling service and attitude. They clearly take no responsibility for other people’s property.

“The value wasn’t excessive but the principle really irritates me.

“I have absolutely no confidence or trust in Royal Mail anymore and look for alternatives to using their service.”

However, after the News contacted Royal Mail they agreed to reimburse Sara the £20.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “Royal Mail would like to apologise to Mr Craig for the damaged birthday card and £20 recently received by his daughter and for any distress caused.

“Royal Mail has reviewed this case and as a gesture of goodwill will be fully compensating Mr Craig for the damaged £20.”

Alway sad when somebody's day is spoiled but if you have ever visited a mail centre
and seen letters flicking between rollers by the thousands you would appreciate jams happen often.

Probably less than 1 in 5,000 letters get chewed by a machine and most of them are only slightly damaged.
the presence of the banknote although ripped suggests robbery or anything sinister not a motive for the damage.

WELL IF VOLUMES KEEP DROPPING AT THE STATED RATE,THEY WILL BE ABLE TO PUT EACH LETTER IN THEIR OWN VAN ;)

Aye it does seem stupid paying out millions for machines when we soon won't have any mail to putthrough them!

Disappointing, yes, but if it contains a £20 note it should have been special Delivery, and if she really likes to keep cards wouldm't the uncle be happy to give her a replacement one ? I think the reason compemsation is just 6 first class stamps now without a certificate of posting is that some years ago people were fraudulently claiming items had gone missing to easily get a larger sum.

That's right, and was probably thus more than 5mm wide so should have attracted a £1.10 surcharge too.
But to put things in perspective there are probably many people in west Cumbria now who wouldn't be the least bit bothered about a damaged birthday card.

You still having problems TT? Dr has upped my painkillers to 30/500 cocodamol and told me to find another job. Finally got an appointment to see the consultant in Orthopeadics and Trauma after 18 months

The troubles still there, but "hopefully" under control now.
Don't think it'll ever totally go away.

Still awaiting Simp/Millar case outcome.
