Direct mail 'has increased by 16%'

Companies which are thinking of using direct mail in their marketing campaigns may wish to invest in customer data solutions following news that the medium has increased by 16% in the UK.

A survey carried out by Mintel found that the volume of direct mail had risen to 6.1 billion pieces year-on-year for the first quarter of 2010.

Insurance companies and credit card organsiations were the main drivers of the direct mail increase, with 8% and 36% increases respectively.

Mintel spokesperson Andrew Davidson said: "All signs are pretty optimistic. Even mortgages have seen a slight uptick. I think we will see continued growth, in credit cards in particular."

Last month, UK Mail announced an increase in profits due to a resurgence in direct marketing.

Chief Executive Guy Busswell told the Financial Times the company now handles 17% of Britain's post, allowing it to compete effectively with Royal Mail.

The research may encourage organisations to combine their digital marketing strategy with direct mail.

Kind of flies in the face of the continual falling mail volumes we keep getting beaten down with. It must just be a co-incidence that direct mail is mainly DSA.

So if it going up by 16 percent and it is DSA we still have to deliver no RM saying mail has fallen by 10 percent it don't take much to work out we still have an increase :arrrghhh

I can see a lot of offices up and down the country over the next few weeks going T**s up and we are suppose to be in the lighter period :Boo hoo!

" Direct Mail" is what we usually call D2D or junk mail.
It might have increased by 16% but that doesn't mean we are delivering it all.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Good Morning Clash city

Maybe then that is why or maybe not that we have this new D2D agreemnt coming in next week
I usually do 3 and this has stayed the same this week but some in my office have 4

I guess then that DSA ( D2D junk mail) has decreased considering that is all I deliver when a saturday comes use to be mailsort and use to have a box full that i left under the frame for the monday now I am lucky if I have a handful

BTW not having a dig so don't take offense :wave

Actually direct mail is both unaddressed junk mail and bulk mailings for eg. Virgin Media, British Gas, BT, Banks, etc.
While we only deliver a fraction of the unaddressed mail, we still deliver most of the addressed junk mail.

The RM bosses say the mail volumes are falling when they really mean, mail volumes are less if you exclude DSA. From a delievery point of view this has always pissed me off and always will. The falling mail volume bullshit is the stick the management have used to beat us over the head for years. Totally ignoring the fact that we are still delivering as much as we ever were.

Yet to ensure the RM makes an even bigger profit than it already is we must all muck in and do more work for less money. Well I'd like CWU leadership to explain to me that if this is the case why aren't managers and executives hitting the streets delivering with us. They have spare time too don't they so why the f**k don't they do more, why don't they get a slice of absorbtion too??
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

The article isn't very clear is it.
Is it talking about addressed or unaddressed mail?
I certainly haven't seen a massive increase in the amount of addressed mail.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
