No mate. If you are on a 25 hour contract then your walk should be prepped for you, they are in my office. (25 hour contract = 5 hours per day. 3.5 hours delivery, 30 minutes transport to and from delivery, 20 minutes meal relief, leaves only 40 minutes to do re-directions, collect specials, bag up etc. Where is the time to do any prep? Not your fault, this is ones of RM's cons.) One of the reps on here should confirm this. Why are you doing lapsing, no part timers in my office do it, we don't have the spare time in our duties and I doubt that you will have either.
Seems that management are taking advantage. Is your union rep any good?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

I feel under pressure most of the time.
I feel i have to rush from the minute i get there till i finish.
If i did the job slowly i'd be cutting off every day and having regular arguments. Its not easy to work to rule and tell the gaffer things aren't right.Especially if you're new.
The prep rate, amount you are supposed to carry and the speed you should be doing the job in general are too high. You shouldn't have to work so fast.Work hard but not fast.
The managers are getting bullied and they start to put pressure on you.
Not everyone is a gobshite who tells the boss to eff off.
Its also hard when there are people that don't moan and accept their lot.Or people who rush to do second jobs or watch loose women and snitch to the manager that people are talking and not sorting fast enough.
In my office 75% feel like me but probably only 2 people ever say anything or take a stance.

To smelly cat this is what you wrote on a previous thread from the guy who took mail home with him 'don't blame other people for 'not telling you', I assume when you were born you had a tongue in your head, learnt to speak and ask questions' So we have a new starter asking for advice and you tell him to stop moaning or leave . Could we have some clarity please . Anyway to the original poster of this thread everything else that has been written here is very good advice take heed of it don't be bullied by your Manager (Manager, always makes me laugh that), and good luck to ya mate

there should be some system put in place to assist new starters ... does the union just not bother until new starters are more settled?

and don't say 'work to rule', you may get in trouble for inciting a strike :chuckle

Mucky as far as i was aware there is someone on hand to help, assist the new starters and they are the indoor coach who get £30 extra in there pay packets for being so. Also mucky until new starters are in the union a reps hands are tied a little me personally would still help if i could even if they werent in the union.

Ben if you want O/T to earn some extra corn then when it suits you do it but make sure you book it .Until you get a permanent contract mate try to keep your head down get on with the job and try not to make waves, but that doesnt mean to say that an employer should take you for a mug,be aware that its illegal for your manager to force you to do O/T.

Good luck mate i hope you get a permanent contract if thats what you want and i hope everythink runs smoothly in the office for you.

Things have got better as I've got more use to the job but it still never ceases to amaze me how much more they want to squeeze into 5 hours. Since the change in door to door pay, I've always had 3 sets of leaflets, I'm fine with that but this week I have 4, one of which is a magazine, I think, taking the piss is the correct term!

Yep Lizard is right as it will become part of the daily workload which meands they cant expect you to collate them in your own time anymore. If the leaflets start to push you over then let a manager know asap as they WILL be expecting this at some point.

Glad things are going better for you buddy :Applause

I know exactly how you feel derbyben as it was the same for me and to be honest it hasn't changed all that much.

I'm on 25 hours but do 30 hours purely because I have mortgage to pay but I am starting to think about sticking to my contracted times cos the managers take the piss far too much and do their best to intimidate you out of claiming o/t.

Now we've been sold down the river with this great agreement we 'all' voted for it can only get worse. Yes the new machines will make prepping quicker but can bet a pound to a pinch of s**t that it will mean they will make the walks ridiculously big.

Ah yes the mythical 39 hour week, much trumpeted by the union bods as a great blessing - but- has anyone gone down to 39 hours yet? Is it a straight hour i.e. one day will be 7 hours or 9 hours if you work in London OR 30 mins one day and 30 minutes another, OR 12 minutes a day for 5 days/15 for London - has there been a "guideline"? will it be by local agreement? - why not just say on x day everyone will work one hour less starting from blah - that is a negotiated hour less

When you first start, claiming overtime for going over shouldn't be an issue. How else are you meant to "bed in"?! Are you meant to come into your first shift and do the whole prep and walk within the allotted time?! Course you are  cos learning a new frame and a new area is easy peasy innit.

My old DOM refused to accept that my old round was too big and said that if I was still booking O/T 6 months after starting, they would look into why I was so slow. Despite the fact that the reserve (that rushed around) could only do it in 3 hours on a reasonably quiet day, it wasn't too big. Even the other reserve guy who used to cover my 1 in 6 used to book the week off I was off so he didn't have to do it.

Now they're wanting to add more onto the round as part of a reshuffle and it went to dispute. Now they're doing lapsing all year around basically as a "punishment" for not agreeing to it in the first place.

The afternoon staff get shafted as, everytime they get to work, they're told there's this that and the other that needs delivering. No training on the round, no clue where they're going in an infamiliar area... <breathe>

We've had some RM casuals start this week (0 hour contracts), one of them did'nt realise they had to go out on delivery and has been moaning to the lineos that their legs hurt  I give them 2 weeks max.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets
