Royal Mail jobs fears on Teesside

REDUNDANCY-HIT Teesside could be facing yet more job losses under proposals to move a Royal Mail operation to Tyneside.

Workers at the Royal Mail depot in Middlesbrough are reeling from the news that their operation could be switched to Gateshead.

Proposals have been drawn up to transfer processing work from the Teesside Mail Centre to an extended Tyneside Mail Centre.

Neil Bendelow, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) area processing representative for Teesside Mail Centre, said: “Everyone is gutted, devastated. There have been rumours for years but when it hits you it is a shock.”

Mr Bendelow estimated that more than 170 jobs could be at risk.

“Obviously we are going to campaign to keep the mail centre open.

“We will be asking local MPs and local councillors to back the campaign to keep Teesside Mail Centre open and keep all the work on Teesside.

“We are going to fight it. We will be fighting all the way as far as we can.”

In a statement, Royal Mail said there would be around 800 fewer roles from the total of nearly 18,000 people it employs in Yorkshire and the North-east, but the intention was to do this without compulsory redundancies.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “Our proposal is to transfer processing work from Teesside Mail Centre to an extended Tyneside Mail Centre.”

He said approximately 145 people currently working at Teesside Mail Centre would be “affected” if the proposals go ahead.

But he stressed: “This does not mean that 145 people would lose their jobs.

“If our proposals go-ahead and processing work from Teesside transfers to Tyneside Mail Centre, those people who want to stay with Royal Mail will have a number of options.

“We are not planning compulsory redundancies and we hope that, given existing turnover rates and with flexibility, everyone who wants to continue to work for Royal Mail will be able to do so.

“We will be talking to all our staff on an individual basis about the options open to them.

“There are no plans at the moment to close completely the Royal Mail building on Cannon Park Way.

“If the proposal goes ahead, we do not anticipate that processing work at Middlesbrough would cease before 2012.”

Still, at least the "YES" voters on Teeside enjoyed the £400 they got, and would have got even had they voted "NO" anyway, should be a lesson to all, vote "YES" to any deal cooked up by the CWU/RM management team, and you'll most likely end up fooked, and fooked hard.

We all knew the M/Cs were going to be hit but what will surprise many of the yes voters or the non-voters is just how many D.O.s will close or "merge" as they like to call it.
