DHL Nearly 70 jobs saved at Wrexham delivery depot

A PARCEL delivery depot in Wrexham has been saved from closure.

A total of 68 jobs were facing the axe at the Home Delivery Network’s depot on Rhosddu Industrial Estate following an announcement by the company last month.

Unite union members have now said negotiations with bosses were successful, with the depot in Wrexham to remain open. However, a branch in Corby, Leicestershire, will close.

Negotiations were conducted with union representatives including national officer Len McCluskey and local officer John Burgham.

Mr Burgham said: “I was involved in the national negotiations because I cover the Wrexham depot and had discussions on the matter with Len McCluskey.

“Negotiations in the main were led by the national negotiation committee.

“We are very, very pleased with the result. The loss of jobs is devastating in the impact it has on families.”

He added: “I’m still waiting to get the full brief on the subject.”

Union officials say the company listened to the argument that it did not make geographical sense to close the Wrexham depot and have deliveries cover an area further away.

The Home Delivery Network is the UK’s largest dedicated home delivery and collection service. It separated from the Littlewoods Shop Direct Group in May 2008.

It delivers more than 300,000 small items every day, including brands such as Tesco Direct, parcel2go.com and Interflora.

In January the company announced it had reached an agreement to acquire DHL Domestic, DHL’s UK parcel delivery business, from Deutsche Post DHL.

The company was unavailable for comment yesterday.

Its one of those crossover things as well as Unite and the CWU, USDAW could quite easily look after their interests and this group were obviously organised by Unite first so that is their Union.

Given the recent disaffection some of the members (me included) have with CWU maybe we should join Unite, They seem to have a lot more balls than the sell-out CWU.

Sorry Brother you are WRONG in my mind! We have to work with what we have and that is the CWU! If you are not happy its because "YOU" have not done enough! Be an IR REP (the worst job of all!) join your office committee be an H&S REP, put yourself up as a branch official and try to change things for your members but please dont flit from one to another and moan as that is just wasted time. WE DID NOT GET THE VOTE AND THATS THAT!
