Postman's tampering affects 3,000

A POSTAL worker has been suspended and an investigation launched after mail destined for Weston houses was tampered with.

Residents across the town were sent letters by Royal Mail this week apologising for envelopes and packages were recovered after not being delivered on time.

Around 3,000 houses are thought to have been affected by the incident, which resulted in residents as far apart as the Bournville and the town centre receiving apologies.

Concerned pensioner Levine Minton, aged 56, told the Mercury she is worried about important pieces of mail going missing.

Miss Minton, of Kenn Close, on the Bournville estate, said: "We will be very anxious until we find out what happened because there could be some personal details in there.

"I know I'm missing gas and electricity bills and I just hope anything else important didn't get lost as well.

"The worst bit is that I don't know who did it or what they wanted with our letters."

People living in Montpelier and Gerard Road have also said they received the company's confession.

It was delivered with the recovered items this week, but Royal Mail has refused to confirm whether the misdemeanour was by a member of staff at a sorting office or a deliverer.

However, an employee has been suspended while an investigation is carried out.

A spokesman for the company said it had a zero tolerance approach to dishonesty and a robust operation to ensure mail is secure.

The spokesman added: "We will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust.

"Royal Mail customers should be confident in our services and systems, but where we are alerted to problems, either through our own stringent checks or from information supplied by our customers, we take decisive action to investigate.

"We constantly review our operation to ensure it's as robust as possible and customers mail is secure."

The news comes two months after 60 items destined for Malvern Road and Exeter Road were stolen when a postman's car was broken into in Quantock Road.

Anybody concerned about missing mail can contact Royal Mail's customer services team on 0845 7740740.

What's this - Mail stolen from a postman's car in Quantock Road - well I never.
