Three postal workers from Northern Ireland were in London recently to receive prestigious awards.

Appropriately, Co Down-born TV presenter Christine Bleakly was at the award ceremony to hand out the awards which aimed to find the best postmen and women in the country.

The three locals, Martin Armstrong from Royal Mail's Belfast Delivery Office, Gerry Magennis employed at the Northern Ireland Mail Centre, Mallusk and Douglas Fillis from Coleraine Delivery Office were representing Northern Ireland in their respective categories of charity fundraising, bravery and community involvement for the tremendous work they do within their local communities.

Martin, Gerry and Dougie scooped top regional prizes in the Royal Mail First Class People Awards and joined 27 other colleagues from across the Uk at the national event. Christine Bleakley presented each of them with their £500 prize money and a framed certificate. Previously they had received £100 for being short-listed for an award.

Unfortunately they were 'pipped at the post' for a national award as Lancing postman, James Macdonald, was named Royal Mail's 'Postman of the Year' by Christine Bleakley.
