Postman from Cornwall admits child sex abuse charges

A postman from Cornwall has admitted grooming hundreds of children for sex over a five-year period, using social networking sites to court his victims.

At Truro Crown Court, Michael Williams, admitted 27 charges of inciting sexual activity, grooming and possessing and distributing indecent images.

He also admitted voyeurism, as well as possessing or making indecent images.

Using multiple aliases, Williams, 28, of Penryn, approached hundreds of children on Facebook and Bebo.

At the hearing, the defendant also asked for some 460 similar offences to be taken into consideration by the court.

The charges he admitted included:

Three counts of grooming children over the internet
Eight counts of sexual activity with a child aged between 13 and 15
Nine counts of causing or inciting a child over 13 to engage in sexual activity
Four counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity
One count of voyeurism
Two counts of making or possessing indecent images
Speaking after the court hearing, Det Insp Simon Snell, from Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "He is a predatory, manipulative and prolific offender.

"The majority of offending has taken place on the internet, specifically on social network sites including Facebook and Bebo.

"I hope the victims and families directly affected will be able to move on and, in particular, the victims will be able to get on with their lives."

The police thanked the Penryn and Falmouth community where Williams grew up and went to school and confirmed that none of the offences took place at either of his former schools.

Williams was also former secretary of Falmouth Town Football Club.

Det Insp Snell said: "Falmouth Town Football Club has fully co-operated with the inquiry.

"They acted diligently by suspending Williams from his footballing commitments as soon as they became aware of the circumstances."

Sentencing of Williams, from Tresooth Lane, has been adjourned for three months for the preparation of psychiatric reports.

Why the hell is the fact that he was a Postman being used in a story like this?! From what I have read he used social networking sites to do most of his dirty work. If he had put his grubby hands on any children while on duty, then of course it should be mentioned.

Linking the Postman job to this creep will only add fuel to the fire into the heads of those who look upon every person walking down the street as a child molester.

Sometimes the old ways were best. In the sixties, these perverts were stuck in long term mental instititions,and at least kept away from the public.On my duty, I have to deliver in an area which houses these people it makes me sick if I have to knock on the door with a packet or recorded.

I am probably one of the ones that surprised you but unfortunately my family has suffered from this particularly vile form of criminal offence, and whilst I am probably more of a forgive than flog usually, when it involves children I loose my ability to look at it other than with anger and a need for retribution.

This though does lead on to my own personal view that any judicial system that allows victims to decide punishment is inherently wrong. However, I do believe, where possible a criminal should face up to the consequences of their crimes and that victims statements should form part of the legal and sentencing processes where applicable.
