Union agreed to H&S need but not RM sackable statement
thought they could take you down conduct code for persistantly not using helmet. that could lead to dismissal.

postwoman from our office knocked off her bike several years ago in rush hour traffic. She died of her injuries. Helmets are mandatory now!

I'm being taken down the conduct code for not wearing my helmet. The lining got wet, so I cycled back with the helmet in my bag, was spotted by a screw and bingo! I'm supposed to be having a meeting tomorrow, but the rep is off. As the screw had already made his mind up to make a case of it, I'll sit there, say nothing and bang in the appeals letter as soon as he's stopped farting about playing at being a manager.

I would not attend this meeting without a union rep there. For your own protection.

You can request a rep from another office if your own rep is not avaiable or pospone the interview until a rep is available.

Thanks mate. I used to be a rep and I'm sure this plank is just after a few brownie points because the idea of counselling didn't even enter his head (and goodness knows there is plenty of room in there). I'll see how the appeal goes because in 27 years I've always had a clear record.

I'm afraid it is the age old story. Until something happens managers will turn a blind eye to Health and Safety and not enforce the rules but if you should have an accident, they will come down on you like a ton of bricks.

Probably the same as ours isn't bothered abour staff carrying two or three bags at a time, not wearing high-viz vests in the yard and much more.

Good luck IWW remember the hazard of the rain running onto your specs from the wet helmet, lesser of two evils - leave the helmet off.

Why do royal mail staff have to wear a cycle helmet when riding a royal mail cycle??

It is not compulsory for other cylists??

Shouldn't we have the choice? I think we should :dance

Thanks for the good wishes Comrades. The screw is an ex-union rep who sold out. His dad was a good union rep who was a fighter against the very things his son now defends. He's not the brightest of people. He had a go at being the DUM, failed because he's too highly strung and has no respect and within a few weeks went back to office boy.
I'm not sure when I'll be seeing him. Probably next week when the sub-rep is available. Either way, he knows he's nothing. Unable to hold a conversation about anything which doesn't involve Warrington Wolves. An intellectual non-starter in fact. Typical screw really.

It was just a way of Royal Mail pretending to be a caring employer and someone at the CWU thinking it was a way of making himself look good. Actually I always wear a helmet when I'm on my own bike (It's a MBK Racer) but the Cyclists Touring Club of Great Britain don't recommend them as they can promote a false sense of security. In other words, they aren't as good a people think they are.
