Meet Ellie - the speed bumb baby born in a Gloucestershire hospital car park

Katie Lee gave birth to her three week old daughter Ellie, in the car park of Gloucestershire Royal Hospital – with the help of some speed bumps and her partner Nick Hyde.

EXPECTING a baby is a bumpy ride for many.

But for Katie Lee it was more up and down than most – thanks to the speedbumps in the hospital car park.

Baby Ellie was born outside Gloucestershire Royal Hospital after being helped into the world by the bumps.

Katie started having contractions at her home in Cinderford.


As they came closer together she jumped in the car with partner Nick Hyde and three-year-old daughter Amber.

But they were stunned when the baby's head suddenly appeared as they drove over the hospital speed bumps.

Little Ellie was born safely just seconds later as her dad pulled over at the maternity entrance.

Katie, 30, said: "On the day of the birth my partner Nick and I decided to go for a walk to Beechenhurst with Amber, because I was six days overdue.

"We walked for about an hour and we headed back to the car and went home. After half an hour at home I started to get pains and thought things were finally moving.

"My partner called the midwives who said we needed to come straight away."

By the time they got to Elton Corner petrol station – about five minutes later – she felt her waters break.

She said: "From then onwards the whole journey was a complete blur."

Katie, who works as a post woman, desperately tried to hold on until she got inside the hospital.

She said: "I was trying to stop the baby coming by resisting the urge to push and by holding my hands between my legs, but I could feel the baby's head and hair.

"As we were driving through the hospital grounds we hit a speed bump and I felt the baby's head come out.

"I shouted to Nick to go over the speed bumps slower as it was making the baby come.

"We hit another speed bump and I felt the baby come out even further.

"Nick pulled into a car parking space at the maternity unit and I said 'the baby is in my leggings'. He helped me pull down my leggings expecting to see just the top of its head and the baby completely fell out into his arms."

Ellie was born on Tuesday, April 27, weighing 8lb 11ozs and Katie and Nick, 31, said the family was delighted.

Katie said: "It was a bit of a shock but she was definitely worth it. She seems completely unphased by the whole event and her sister Amber is thrilled.

"She saw the whole thing and as Ellie came out she punched the air and cheered because she really wanted a sister."

But the birth was also tinged with sadness for the family. Katie's brother Ryan Lee was killed in a road accident in January.

The Forest Green Rovers fan was riding his Honda bike when tragedy struck along the A46.

Katie added: "He would have been over the moon.

"He was always joking that I make mountains out of molehills and I'm sure he would have said that about the unusual birth."
