VILLAGERS near Winchester toasted their “perfect postman” who has hung up his mailbag after nearly 45 years.
More than 150 householders from Sparsholt turned out to a special presentation for Eric Lacy, who has been delivering to the village for the last three decades.
Mr Lacy, who said he could have written a book on what he had seen and heard on his daily round, was the first on the scene following a raid at Sparsholt Post Office in June 2007.
The 65-year-old, of Coppice Close, Teg Down, said: “The most memorable moment was when Linda Scorey got attacked in the village shop.
“I was the first on the scene and I went in and her head was pouring with blood, I helped her, I got some tissues and then called the emergency services, there was pandemonium for a few minutes.”
The married father-of-three, added: “That will stick in my mind because Linda is a very good friend.”
Villagers held a whip round for Mr Lacy and handed over a cheque for £800 on Thursday (April 22) evening.
David Parker, who has stood down as chairman of Sparsholt Parish Council, said: “He's a really nice guy and he's a damn good postman.
“He doesn't just leave a card saying there's a parcel he'll actually return later in his round to see if you're in. He keeps an eye on the elderly and if he thinks there might be a problem he lets a neighbour know.
“Everybody in the village thinks he's the perfect postman.”
Mr Lacy, who will spend his retirement gardening and caravanning, added: “I have grown up with the village, little tots have grown up and they have got children of their own, now.
“I shall miss all the people there, there's quite an array of different characters which were very interesting. I have always felt part of the village, they have always made me very welcome.”

Cushy duty if he has time for that nonsense. I bet their new guy who is given 600 extra drops in another village 12miles away won't have time for double-try deliveries.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:

If you read the story you will see it tells you where he lives - and it's not in on the round, he lives in Winchester. FFS.
I was making the point that the days of the 'do anything for you' postman are nearly over and stories like this just give a flase impression that all postmen have time on their hands to mess about like this instead of being unable to complete in time most days.
