Well, I was one of the people that tax credits helped to get back to work. After 9 yrs of being a carer for my parents. When my dad died, I could easily have been just as well off claiming depression, have a nice claim for incapacity benefit, topped up with income support.
I'm no better off working, but i'm no worse off either. TBH I think a £ earned is better than a £ for nothing. Gives me more pride in myself, and teaches my children a valuable lesson in life. Especially when they see that their father doesn't work to avoid paying maintenance....
What I've never understood about the tax credits system is why people have to wait til they are 25 to claim it. My daughter has her own place, on minimum wage, and gets no help whatsoever, has full rent to pay etc etc etc. Yet someone at 25 yrs old would get an extra £300-500 a year on top. Weird!
