Tributes paid to long-serving Post Office worker

Tributes have been paid to a woman who ran a village Post Office for 35 years before retiring - and then worked another six years at a neighbouring branch.

Norah Cameron, who died suddenly last month aged 71, ran the Ribchester Post Office up to 2004 before retiring and then returning to work at Longridge Post Office up until her death.

Her daughter-in-law, Julie Cameron, told how the grandmother-of-seven and great grandmother-of-four loved being part of the community she served for more than three decades.

Her funeral will be held at St Wilfrid’s Church in Ribchester next Wednesday, May 12 and is expected to be attended by the hundreds of people she served during her years behind the counter.

Julie, who is married to Mrs Cameron’s youngest son, Ian, 47, said: “She finished at Ribchester when she was 65, but she could not stand retirement, she loved the work she did in the Post Office but she loved seeing people as well.

“You know what women are like, she loved having a good chinwag with people and she knew everyone in Ribchester and everyone knew her.

“We must have had 50 or more cards come through to us and there is as many again at her old house, they keep coming three or four every day and that says a lot about how everyone felt about her.”

Mrs Cameron, whose husband, Bob, a recycling worker, died three years ago, was also the treasurer for the Women’s Institute in nearby Knowle Green and enjoyed walking in the Ribchester area.

Julie said: “It will be standing room only at the funeral with all the people from the Post Offices and from the W.I.”

She is survived by two sons Ian and John, 49, and a daughter, Margaret, 44.

Funeral arrangements are being organised by William Houghton Funeral Directors.
