Unions warn of strike chaos over David Cameron's planned £6bn cuts

Union bosses last night warned of strike chaos if Tories slash jobs and services in planned £6billion cuts.

Unison’s Dave Prentis vowed to battle for the thousands of jobs he feared would go under David Cameron’s plans for his first year.

He said: “Public sector workers did not cause the economic crisis and will not be made to pay the price for bailing out the bankers.”

“We will fight for the thousands of jobs in imminent danger if the Tories’ dangerous and irresponsible plans to cut fast and deep are realised. The country will not just be plunged into a further recession, but social dislocation and industrial strife.”

RMT rail union boss Bob Crow added: “They’re planning an assault on living standards, jobs and services that will mirror the cuts that have caused chaos in Greece. The fightback starts here. There will be widespread industrial and public resistance.”

CWU workers fear Conservative plans to privatise Royal Mail.

Leader Billy Hayes pledged: “All unions will stand up against such potentially barbaric cuts and any moves to sell off public services.”

Wished there was a sick bag smiley. now it seems that he has not been given his safe labour seat, he has decided once again to become a Unionist!

Despite the fact they are still talking - I can't see this happening.
I don't think (m)any people voting Lib Dem thought their vote was going to be used to prop up a minority Tory government.
Lib Dem voters won't accept it. Lib Dem MP's won't accept it. And if Clegg props up Cameron's government it will only be for a brief time and then his party will be consigned to the dustbin of history.
And I doubt if any Tory MP's want it either.
Although none of them either want it or can really afford it we will probably have another election this year.

I agree CCR it is lose/lose situation for both parties but a have a nasty feeling that the temptation of real power may overide common sense.
This chance may never come again for the LibDems...somebody once said ""Lust of power burns more fiercely than all the passions combined."

andy, deliveries could be very profitable indeed if priced on a commercial basis which is what a private company would demand. Royal Mail is absorbing the cost of providing a social service (the USO) and subsidising the DSA parasites and still generating a small profit. Give us a level playing field and watch profits skyrocket.

Yes Profit--but what about quality of service. my son works all over the world, and for all it's faults, we still deliver one of the best and cheapest services.

Really?
The reason that the Tories and Labour have dominated British Politics for so long, isn't because either are any good (although Labour once was). It's because there are too many people who're too scared to vote for anyone else, in case the wrong "main" Party gets in. The fact that we ended up with a Hung Parliament this time, proves that it's possible for the other Parties to have a big say in what happens in the Country. Now obviously a Hung Parliament is a far from satisfactory result for anyone. But it proves that if people actually pay attention to what all the Parties have to offer, and make an informed decision. Rather than always voting Labour or Tory, just to avoid the other one getting in. Then we can have real change. Because whoever gets to form the Government, will have to take into account the views of whoever they make a deal with. So they will have to change some of their policies. With a bit of luck. Next time, we'll get a better result for one of the "other" parties. Rather than keep alternating between Labour and Conservatives all the time!

Or perhaps you think that Britain has been run well, up to now?
First we had Thatcher. Who sold of virtually everything that wasn't nailed down, to cut Taxes. And encouraged people to forget about Communities, and just "look after number 1". Leading to the Yuppie Culture, for the rich. And unneccessary suffering for the rest. And of course, the destruction of hundreds of thousands of people's livelihoods. Because there weren't enough jobs available, when privatised industries were sold off, to greedy slash and burn businessmen.

Then we had New Labour. Which wasn't much of an improvement. Although to be fair, they weren't as bad as the Tories. But they still decimated the already hard hit Public Services.

Now personally, I didn't vote Lib-Dem. But I didn't vote Labour or Tory either. Although, before you start. I was outvoted, and we ended up with a Labour MP.
