Martin is not after any Labour seat and you got it wrong about Billy and Dave. Yes Johnson jumped ship in 97 but that was only because he had lost the employee agenda debate with the union.
Did he get wind of the planned sell off of the remaining MC's ? When they are privatised the last thing the new owners will want is an organised workforce so I guess not having a top level representative would be a good first step :cry

Any suggestions for how many underlings Dave Ward should have?

I wouldnt be surprised if we have one national RML officer rather than outdoor and indoor in future.

No I think that Terry Pullinger may pick up the mail centres as Bob has the majority of the workforce in letters now.

No Martin was not part of John Keggies mob , he did however support the first way forward agreement as a PEC member and then voted against the second way forward ballot. He stood against Mike Hogan for the indoor assistant secretary .

There have been rumours of him going for a few months , but it came as a shock yesterday to most. Martin has always been an hard worker but the job is stressful and demanding and obviously he has made his decision now.

There was however a motion to postal conference from Merseyside which called for a no confidence in him for his role in the current mail centre closures in the North West.

And a half pay one as well!

Still every credit to him it must take a strong stomach to work with this gang of no marks.

Fishtank that was to general conference , Merseyside also put a no confidence motion to postal conference which is admitted to the agenda.

Now in terms of the reasons behind the motion , I know that there were a lot of Branch"s who were less than happy with the lack of leadership and comms etc during the North West mail centre closures. Other then that i have no idea why only Merseyside have submitted a motion on their own.

No. 403/10
Ref: 10004c
Date:10th May 2010

TO: ALL BRANCHES WITH POSTAL MEMBERS

Dear Colleague,

RE: POSTAL DEPARTMENT REVIEW

The purpose of this LTB is to advise branches that the Postal Executive have agreed to undertake a strategic review of the workings of the Postal Department, including the roles and responsibilities of National Officers.

The review is part of existing conference policy and a full terms of reference will be placed before the Postal Executive immediately following annual conference.

The review will be wide ranging and also establish the Postal Department's strategic priorities as we face up to the challenges that lie ahead.

Pending the outcome of the review, the Postal Executive have agreed not to fill the vacant Indoor Assistant Secretary post arising from the retirement of Martin Collins, at this time. In the meantime, the Indoor Assistant Secretary role will be covered by the nominated substitute, Phil Browne.
Any enquiries regarding this LTB should be directed to the DGS (P) Department.

Yours sincerely

Dave Ward
Deputy General Secretary (P)
