Mold postman loses job after drink-driving

MOLD postman Clifford Glyn Jones did his rounds then went to the pub.

He hid his Royal Mail van behind The Drovers’ Arms, Denbigh Road, in the town where he hoped no one would see it.

A court heard how he downed four or five pints and then returned to the sorting office.

But his manager had been told the van was parked at the pub and was waiting for him.

He suspected Jones had been drinking and the police went around to his home in Meadow Place, Mold, a short time later.

There he provided a positive breathtest and was arrested.

Jones, 44, a postman for 10 years, now of Beech Drive in Mold, admitted driving the Royal Mail Vauxhall Combo van with 50 microgrammes of alcohol in his breath, compared to the legal limit of 35, in Earl Road, Mold.

He was banned from driving for 12 months and fined £100 with £100 costs.

Flintshire Magistrates’ Court was told he had lost his job as a result of the incident on February 26.

Interviewed, Jones said he took the van back to the depot and walked the short distance home.

Brian Cross, defending, said his client was a man of previous good character.

He had made full and frank admissions. Jones had been to work that day and had carried out his duties properly.

Then he went to the pub in order to pay a £1 bonus ball on the lottery, had a drink, and while there he accepted he drank some more.

He had been driving for more than 30 years, had a clean licence, but as a result of the incident he had lost his job and his relationship with his partner had ended. The defendant was now applying for job seekers allowance.

No sympathy from me either! My Niece lost one of her friends to a drunk driver, a couple of years ago. And there are far too many other people, who've suffered injuries, or been killed by people like him!

He's lost his job, and his clean licence. But at least no-one lost their life! He should have considered that, before drink driving. Let's face it. He wouldn't have tried to hide the van, if he didn't know that what he was doing was wrong.

I never thought I'd say this. But for once. WELL DONE TO THE MANAGER FOR SACKING HIM!

Not the first time neither that a postie has been done or lost their job through drink driving.
