Unions warn of strike chaos over David Cameron's planned £6bn cuts

Union bosses last night warned of strike chaos if Tories slash jobs and services in planned £6billion cuts.

Unison’s Dave Prentis vowed to battle for the thousands of jobs he feared would go under David Cameron’s plans for his first year.

He said: “Public sector workers did not cause the economic crisis and will not be made to pay the price for bailing out the bankers.”

“We will fight for the thousands of jobs in imminent danger if the Tories’ dangerous and irresponsible plans to cut fast and deep are realised. The country will not just be plunged into a further recession, but social dislocation and industrial strife.”

RMT rail union boss Bob Crow added: “They’re planning an assault on living standards, jobs and services that will mirror the cuts that have caused chaos in Greece. The fightback starts here. There will be widespread industrial and public resistance.”

CWU workers fear Conservative plans to privatise Royal Mail.

Leader Billy Hayes pledged: “All unions will stand up against such potentially barbaric cuts and any moves to sell off public services.”

For postal workers, what difference would they see if the RM were to be sold off?
After all is said and done, postal workers jobs, terms and conditions, have been battered to death, and without the dubious trappings of privatisation.
In deliveries, the job now bears little or no resemblance to the one many of us signed up to many moons ago. Under a Labour government that has never backed any single group of workers in a fight against aggressive management, there is no doubt whatsoever that postal workers are in a job that has certainly taken a turn or two for the worse, and in a fairly short period of time, it was only in 2003 that the CWU sold out it's members by agreeing the Single Daily Delivery, seven years. In those seven years, we've seen job and finish go, we've seen the night shift disappear, we've seen an end to second deliveries, we've seen an end to a whole raft of allowances, Sunday collections, bank holiday collections, over 60,000 jobs were axed, with over 24,000 more to go with the latest appalling agreement signed up to by the crassly incompetent CWU. We've seen our rounds get bigger, and bigger, we've seen our various local units lumbered with ludicrous budgets and targets, we've seen management introduce for itself a lavish bonus scheme, one which it will find very hard to end, as it's us that earns their bonus for them.
Not forgetting that the CWU gave license for management to try and cover rounds vacant because the duty holder is either off sick or on annual leave, by getting those unlucky enough to be in, to absorb the rounds into their duty time.
The list is endless. And to date, we haven't been privatised.
How much worse could things get for beleaguered postal workers?
As for me, after the latest betrayal by my so-called union, I could not care a jot about privatisation, because I now have a job worth quitting, thanks to Billy, Dave, Bob, and the rest of the appeasers in the CWU.

It pains me to say this but I have to aggree with DH. The only ones to fear privatistion are the hoards of managers.

I disagree. Things can, and WILL get worse if we're sold off. For example: We'd all be on the same wages as our so laughably called, competitors. Now, I'm far more interested in protecting T&Cs than getting wage rises (as I've said many times on here), but to have our wages slashed, would be a major problem. It's bad enough, for those who've lost out this time. But we'd be looking at a much larger cut, in private hands.

Then there's what's left of the service. That'd be hit hard too. There's a reason that we're the only ones to deliver "the final mile". It's not profitable enough. And I seriously doubt, it ever could be. So we'd end up with legal challenges to the USO, and eventually the remote areas, would get either a more expensive, reduced, or more likley both, service.

andy, deliveries could be very profitable indeed if priced on a commercial basis which is what a private company would demand. Royal Mail is absorbing the cost of providing a social service (the USO) and subsidising the DSA parasites and still generating a small profit. Give us a level playing field and watch profits skyrocket.

I have thought about it, and I don't want to fight for this job as it is now, not anymore. Privatisation will come eventually, RM/CWU are gearing us up for it, and I for one don't think it will make much difference.
I'm starting to find it hard to believe that I was once proud to be a postman, that I really did love my job, so long ago that now seems. Now I'm just indifferent about a job, which just lately, I have given some thought to quitting.

PS I did not vote Lib Dem - but calling people morons for exercising their democratic right makes me think sometimes British voters get the Government deserve rather than the one they need.
