Mick's a first-class postman

A WIGAN postman who has been involved in the Scouting movement for over 25 years has won a top regional prize in an awards scheme run by Royal Mail.

Mick Perry, who works at Wigan Delivery Office on Hallgate, scooped the community title for the North West in the First Class People Awards 2010 in recognition of his work with 7th Wigan (All Saints) Scout Group.

Mick joined the Group at the age of 10 and was a Scout at 11 before becoming an instructor at 16. He eventually rose to Scout Group Leader and is currently a Scout Leader, giving up his annual leave to take children on trips and expeditions. He was nominated for a First Class People award by work colleague Yvonne Marshall and will receive £500 for winning the regional round of the postie of the year competition

He has now been invited to the national ceremony hosted by The One Show’s Christine Bleakley, when national winners in three categories – bravery/lifesaving, charity fund-raising and community – will be announced, each winning £1,000. The overall winner of the First Class People Award, who will bag a prize worth £3,000, will also be revealed on the day.
