RESIDENTS at a Torquay block of flats say their extra security is so good, it is even keeping the postman out.
Visitors, carers and the newspaper delivery boy are being forced to shout up at the windows of the maisonettes in Moor Lane Close since a new security door was fitted a month ago.
It means that the front door is always locked — but a buzzer intercom system has not been installed.
Disabled pensioner Eileen Goddard, who lives on the first floor, says she has to go up and down the stairs every time she has a visitor.
The 81-year-old has had two hip replacements in recent years.
She said: "It's a disgrace. They should never have installed the door without an intercom system.
"Now I'm having to listen out and look out of the window and go downstairs to let people in. It may not seem a lot but it's very inconvenient," she said.
Mrs Goddard said that some residents had cancelled their newspaper deliveries and were relying on a ground-floor neighbour to listen out for the postie.
Molly Holmes, managing director of the Riviera Housing Trust, which manages the property, said it was meeting residents to discuss the options to solve the problem.
"We replaced the front door as part of our Decent Homes programme of works, and it has significantly improved security at the scheme," she said.
"However, we understand our residents' desire to improve the communal front door system and we are meeting with them to explain the options available, including fitting an automatic door entry system or individual doorbells.
"We are confident that together we can come up with a solution which meets the needs of everyone at Moor Lane Close."

"The 81-year-old" probably remembers pre-Thatcher Britain when many people never bothered to lock their front doors.
