AFTER 20 years service, the familiar sight of 'Polly the Post' pounding the streets of Port William ends tomorrow.
At about 1pm Polly Smith, who has lived in the village for 44 years, will finish delivering her last bag of mail and head off into retirement.
Dedication is the best word to sum up Polly, who has been a loyal servant of the Royal Mail for two decades, going round the village on foot in conditions you can only find on the West Coast of Scotland - blazing sunshine, gale force winds, torrential rain and ice and snow - sometimes all on the same day.
Polly said: "I will miss seeing everyone in the mornings for a wee chat but I am looking forward to spending more time with my family who are all involved in the sport of motocross. I dare say I'll be busy babysitting my four grandchildren as well.
"My husband Bob and I are also looking forward to going on tour in our camper van - particularly to the Lake District."
Tommy Mann, Royal Mail Delivery Office Manager at Newton Stewart, said: "Polly Smith has been the face of Royal Mail in Port William for 20 years. She is the salt of the earth and will be sorely missed.
"I would like to thank Polly for all her help and loyal service over the years and wish her all the best for a long, happy and well deserved retirement."
