Postie Jane is in running for top UK award

When it comes to caring for the community some people really deliver.

Alexandria postwoman Jane Findlay received a £500 prize and could win a £3000 holiday after an elderly customer nominated her for an award.

Jane, 44, is officially a First Class Postie after winning the Scottish section of Royal Mail’s First Class People Awards 2010 for her community involvement. She will head down to London for the national awards.

After an accident in 2009 left Barbara Kennedy with a smashed ankle and a broken leg, hip and arm, Jane checked on her three times a day while doing her deliveries.

Mrs Kennedy said: “I am absolutely delighted Jane is being rewarded for the fantastic help she has given me. She really deserves it.”

Jane passed Mrs Kennedy’s home in the morning and checked she was alright before returning later with her mail and to help Mrs Kennedy with her medication.

After she finished her delivery round, Jane stopped by again to change Mrs Kennedy’s bandages and help her dress. Mrs Kennedy nominated Jane for her commitment above and beyond the call of duty, and Jane’s employers agreed.

Ian McKay, director of Scottish affairs at the Royal Mail, said: “Jane is a brilliant winner of this award. Her selflessness and willingness to go the extra mile demonstrates exactly why our postmen and women are such highly valued members of their communities.

“These awards are about recognising the postmen and women across the country who are unsung heroes.”

Royal Mail customers were invited to nominate the 16,800 postmen and women in Scotland for awards in three categories; bravery, community and fundrasing.

Jane is one of three winners in Scotland who will travel to London for the national awards on May 24 where she will have the chance to win a holiday worth £3,000.

Jane, who won the community section as well as overall award for Scotland, said: “I was really happy just to have been nominated for this award, but to have won the Scottish prize is fantastic. I’m just pleased to have been able to help Mrs Kennedy.”

Darren Lee, from Dundee, and Graham Watson, from Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, won in the bravery and fundraising categories and will join Jane in London.
