I used to do a bit of docket on a rough council estate on saturday mornings, mainly as nobody else seemed to want it , soon found out why !!!! Used to get there around 11 am ( good old days) and there would be gangs of them roaming about after their giro, needed it before the P.O. closed for half day. Needless to say, I wouldnt give any of them out and made them go behind their front door and wait...you can imagine the abuse but , hey just doing the job. Then along came SDD, later starts etc. Wasnt even getting on the first call until 12 noon, to late for their weekend dole to be cashed....loved every moment of it :dance :dance :dance :dance ...lazy scubags !!! sadistic...to fooking right I am( to that crowd anyway)

When I worked in Callers the dole office used to send them round to us telling them that we've got their giros. They also used to send them round to use our customer toilets. Had a few in asking for Social Fund loans  At the moment there is a billboard in between my office and the jobcentre with the poster.

Once when I was doing some much needed afternoon OT on the enquiry counter a young women in grey joggers and a dirty T shirt came in to ask if we had her giro. I explained that all deliveries were now completed for the day and there would be no more mail till the next day. To please her I went and looked at the frame and the missort frame to check but found nothing.

She really went into one and ended up shouting that she was going home to wake her husband and he was going to come down and see me so I’d better have her F**cking giro. This was 2pm by the way. :left:

So I was dreading this guy coming down in a rage but funny enough this kinda spaced out skinny bloke came in and was really calm about it when I explained the situation and went away without any trouble.

I thought that was it bit NO about an hour later she was back with her kids no less and screaming at me to explain to her children why they would be going without their take away dinner tonight. She then went on to suggessted I give her £20 out of the till to pay for it.

It got really messy and we ended up threatening to call the police unless she left, which she finally did. What a pig of a day that was.

now you see the genius of moving delivery offices to the outskirts of town
they would never make 3 trips in one day for that ;)

The walk i have been covering for the past few weeks covers a fairly well-off area, mainly Asian families (Yes, i said it). I reckon i must deliver about 4-5 giros a week to various addresses, none of which are smaller than 3 bed semis. One of the houses that recieves a giro is a four bed detached house, complete with 2 new Mercs and a Beamer on the drive. :hmmmm

Doesn't surprise me one bit, sadly.

From the class (or not as the case may be) of the person waiting for you on the door step.

I had a belter a few years ago,
i was getting grief pretty much every morning on a walk i'd only recently started on,
the guy would be stood on his doorstep shouting at me for his mail, asking why it was sooo late etc,
not exactly abusive, but getting on my wick big time,
one morning, i got to his close, and sure enough he was stood there next to his private hire taxi waiting to start his shift,
he remarked that he'd been waiting ages for me and how it was no good that his mail was so late,
one of his letters (surprise , surprise) was a giro in his name,
i informed him, my sister (at the time) worked for the DHSS, and if i ever seen him on his doorstep / if he ever opened his mouth to me or any of my colleagues again, i'd be giving her a phone call

never seen him again after that.

All great stories folks, thanks for the larfs! :Applause

If I may add a little gem of my own...

I work in a crown office, and there is nowt better than when a drunk/junkie 'giro-scum' comes to us, has to wait over 40 minutes to be served, pissing n moaning the whole time, then when they eventually get to the counter cursing etc etc, you take one look at the giro and it is 'coded' for another office!

"Oh, sorry old chum, that can only be cashed in the little sub down the road, that shut at 12.30."

Or one that is dated the next day etc.

"Come back tomorrow. Who's next?"

Oh, great times! I'm welling up just thinking about it now.

Hope I get a few tomorrow...
