BRAVERY AWARD: Dundee postman Darren Lee was nominated after going to the aid of an elderly customer caught up in a gas drama at her home

A DUNDEE postman who came to the assistance of an elderly woman has been recognised with an award for bravery.

Darren Lee, who works out of the Dundee West Delivery Office, was on his daily round when he found the disorientated woman walking in the rain.

Mr Lee, 40, escorted the woman home only to discover the gas cooker had been turned on but left unlit.

He stayed with her until her carers arrived and then completed his delivery round.

Mr Lee, of Myrekirk, has been awarded £500 for coming first in the bravery category of the Scottish section of Royal Mail’s First Class People Awards 2010.

Mr Lee said: “I was really happy to have been nominated, but to have won the Scottish prize is fantastic.

“I just did what anyone else would have done in those circumstances and I’m pleased I was able to prevent a possible tragedy.”

Mr Lee will travel to London later this month as he has been nominated for the UK bravery category.

Royal Mail Group director of Scottish affairs Ian McKay said: “Our people often go the extra mile to help their communities in many different ways.

“These awards are about recognising the postmen and women across the country who are very often unsung heroes.”
