Depending on length of service mate would depend on the training they have received, over the last 10 years say,
new managers should have done the 12 weeks IOM's course, shortened to 8 i believe, this has now been replaced by
the deputy managers scheme, but dont forget we have the graduate scheme for university bods as well, time served
managers will have done numerous courses, normally on a day or so for various things. They used to do a lot of training
at COTON HSE & somewhere in CARDIFF but i think that is rarely used these days apart from Graduate Entrants

You can get alot of course info on a computer system called PALMS, your DOM has access to this on his PC.

Not sure what other access you can get, but i think RM now do something called open learning, this is open
to all

Yes just like the apprentice scheme,being a postman is not a trade.This a government con to make people think they are doing something about vocational training,what makes a good manager is experience.Not coming from college/university and not knowing anything about the job,and how to get the best from the staff.The managment of Royal Mail only seem to think that we postman are as thick as two short planks.Like mushrooms feed them s**t and keep them in the the dark.THEY WOULD NOT SURVIVE ON DAY AS MANAGERS IN A PRIVATE FIRM

Anyone can get into PaLMS (Performance and Learning Management System) on their own computer at home. You just phone (Sheffield, I think) and ask them to activate your PaLMS account. Give 'em your details and they'll give you a username and password. Best to be logged on to your own computer as you speak to them though - if I remember right, they talk you through your initial log on.

ONE of the rules we were taught was NEVER ASK ONE OF YOUR EMPLOYEES TO DO ANYTHING THAT YOU WOULD NOT BE PREPARED TO DO YOURSELF....unspecified delivery spans and taking a cut in your wages for doing more work springs to mind.

Never ask an employee to do something that you couldn't do. In another industry (probably most outside RM), management training includes all aspects of their employees jobs. The reason, how could they train, motivate or monitor staff performance if they didn't know exactly what they did. Seems so simple, doesn't it.

Not kidding here. I am the proud owner of a certificate stating that I had passed their Management training--but I never went on any course! I can only assume it was meany for someone else with the same name, but I've had it 7 years now!
