A MAN has admitted stealing thousands of pounds from Royal Mail.

Kevin Colin Rowlands, of Chester Street, Mold, pleaded guilty at Chester, Ellesmere Port and Neston Magistrates Court to stealing £3,000 and 2,000 Euros from the Royal Mail sorting office in Chester between October and December 2009.

The court heard at the time of the offence Rowlands worked in the special delivery section on the night shift from 10pm to 6am.
The service is used to send money, including currency, to customers and post offices using the track and trace section of the special delivery service.

Royal Mail investigators became suspicious when several cash packages went missing during transit.

A test package containing £1,000 was sent and on December 5, 2009, Rowlands was seen on CCTV handling the package and placing it in his rucksack and leaving the area.

Defending, Richard Thomas told the court Rowlands had worked for Royal Mail subsidiary Cashco for eight years and in February 2009 was offered redundancy or a role in the sorting office.

Rowlands said he hated the sorting office and felt confined.

He said he committed the offences hoping to be caught as a cry for help as he hated working there, but said it was the wrong way to go about it.

Rowlands, who served in the Army from 1976-86, had no previous convictions.

He will be sentenced on May 7.

As an Ex - I completely and fully agree. The official system for helping someone from a Military and Closed Society integrate into a Civilian Society is non existent, and let e tell you the culture shock is severe.

For instance I finished a tour in Bosnia and then was discharged nearly straight away. Disembarkation Leave, Terminal Leave and Resettlement Courses all meant I had only 2 weeks on base when we got back.

I had a few "problems" that me and my family had to cope with but with the helps of SSAFA and RAFBF and counselling we came through it OK. Sadly they still rely on charities to do what the Forces should do as a matter of course before people get discharged.

I know your post was meant to be flippant...but can I say that the offence was commited in Chester and not Mold. the offender was from Mold but worked in the Chester office...just wanted to clarify !!!

I heard about a postal worker nicking money from specials by putting them in the freezer so that the seal could be opened and resealed. I don't know if this is true or just a myth.
