Fears over south Norfolk post office's future

A sub-postmistress fears her south Norfolk post office may never reopen.
The post office in the Spar shop, Kenninghall, has been closed for about a month.

Sub-postmistress Michelle Toms, who also owns the shop, said the closure was due to a technical fault and she was trying to get Post Office Ltd to fix it, but has been left frustrated.

She said: "I'm waiting to hear from the Post Office. You never speak to anyone. You can only do it in writing, or on the helpline which is horrendous - no one gets back to you."

Miss Toms said although her post office was not one of those named in a raft of closures in 2008, she feared Post Office Ltd was not commited to its reopening.

"In the back of my mind I think that there are not many post offices that were closed in this area. We wonder if it is an opportunity (for Post Office Ltd) to say: we won't bother."

But Post Office Ltd spokesman Sally Hopkinson moved to reassure Kenninghall residents.

She said: "Kenninghall Post Office is closed due to circumstances outside our control and we apologise to customers for any inconvenience this may cause.

"We can reassure customers that we do want to retain the service in Kenninghall and we are doing our utmost to restore Post Office services to the community as soon as possible."

Miss Toms said she has offered residents a free 'taxi' service each weekday morning to the nearest post office at Banham.

"We go out to help people as much as we can, especially those who haven't got transport so they don't feel any inconvienience from this," she said.
