ALMOST 100 mail workers staged a wildcat strike at Liverpool city centre’s main delivery office today.

Postal workers at Brunswick Dock refused to work in a row over “teething problems” after moving from the Copperas Hill sorting office, which is due for closure.

The Brunswick Dock centre delivers mail to the L1 to L3 postcodes, with city centre businesses among those most affected by the walk-out.

It is understood staff responsible for L8 are still working.

Mark Walsh, branch secretary of the CWU, said a union rep was at the office trying to negotiate a resolution.

“I am led to believe this has happened because of some teething problems from the move that have spilled over.

“We have got people down there now trying to resolve the situation.”

He said he was hopeful that a solution could be found within a couple of hours.

The Copperas Hill site is controversially due for closure later this year as part of cost-cutting measures by the Royal Mail.

It has been the subject of a campaign to keep it open, that has previously seen workers strike.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “Around 90 staff have taken unofficial strike action at the Liverpool South delivery office, affecting deliveries to the L1 to L3 districts, over an operational issue.

“We are talking to the CWU and doing all we can to resolve the situation.”

Nearly 100 Liverpool postal workers walked out this morning - hitting deliveries to city firms.

Mail staff at the Brunswick Dock site staged the impromptu strike over a "withdrawn agreement" regarding redundancies.

They are also unhappy at "teething problems" caused by the move from the Copperas Hill sorting office, according to the Communication Workers Union (CWU).

City Centre businesses are among those affected by the 'wildcat' walk-out, although L8 is still receiving mail.

Mark Walsh, CWU branch secretary, said: "Management have reneged on an agreement over planned redundancies - it has now been withdrawn altogether.

"And we should have gone to Brunswick a lot earlier than we did. Still the canteen and staff rooms there are basically not big enough.

"This is the straw that broke the camel's back."

Royal Mail confirmed it is in the process of attempting to reach a deal with staff.

A spokesman said: "Around 90 staff have taken unofficial strike action at Liverpool South Delivery Office this morning, affecting deliveries in the L1-L3 postcode districts, over an operational issue.

"We are talking to the CWU and are doing all we can to resolve the situation as soon as possible."

Mr Walsh added the union is also trying to convince the workers to return to their jobs.

He said: "I hope common sense prevails and we'll get everything sorted."

Postal staff have campaigned to keep Copperas Hill open, but it will close later this year.

This dispute today was about royal mail reneging on a signed deal to let staff leave after losing there jobs!Royal mail are constantly changing the goal posts to run the postal service into the ground!
I have worked for Royal Mail for 23 years and have never wanted to be on strike ! But you can only be pushed so far and this is the first time I agree with what we are doing! And you might not be aware we work a split shift ! thats why vans are parked at houses! ask questions before you make assumptions!

and do a full day for a change..some people have
to work three shifts..others have shifts a lot
worse than yours...and we can note that you are
getting a 3% pay rise per the next three years
when others are getting a pay cut or the SACK.
