It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Does anyone know any cheap printers? Who would ....say.....make several thousand NO JUNK MAIL stickers, about letterbox flap size so that some body of environmentally conscious people could post them free to households?

Re: opt out D2D
All of you that are advocating encouraging people to opt out of d2d really need your heads examined, you really do.
We are paid for delivering mail, be that packets, flats, letters or d2d items. Making your employer lose revenue - and thus give you less items to deliver - would threaten your job security in the long term.
Less items to deliver = fewer postmen needed to deliver the reduced number of items
And of course Royal Mail are not going to tolerate you taking any of the actions you suggest. You would be damaging the business that pays your wages, and it would be considered gross misconduct.
Do you think McDonalds would tolerate people on their payroll telling a customer at the counter 'you can get a better deal at Burger King' ?

Just because I currently work in a MC, you assume I've never done deliveriesdblad wrote: Try delivering the bastard things then lets hear your views
And if / when my MC is closed down, I'll doubtless be delivering the 'bastard things' again in the future. But if it pays my wages and keeps me in a job, I'll do them.
Moaning about delivering any type of leaflet / packet / flat / letter is about as stupid as a call centre worker moaning about having answer phone calls FFS !!!!
If you didn't fancy a job primarily involving delivering stuff, was it perhaps a bad career choice on your part to join an organisation called Royal Mail ?
Hint: The clue is in the firm's name

Re: opt out D2D
It's not about having to deliver the d2d , its about getting paid for delivering them . at the present time my duty has over 700 calls , i work part time .
The full timer on the duty next to me has 124 d2d calls due to his duty being partly business and rural . when the new propasals come into effect , the full timer will be getting £20.80 for 124 calls and i will be getting around £12 for over 700 calls . That is where the problems lie .
You can tell me that the full timer will be prepping my d2d for me , but most days when i go in i have to prep a good bit of my frame , i think i'll end up prepping even more and getting paid less .
mail centre staff need to think about this before they come on here and give an opinion

For my round which is 600+ calls I will be getting in effect £8 for doing D2Ds - why because to get the £20.60 I have to give up D2D paymentsjohnr67 wrote:It's not about having to deliver the d2d , its about getting paid for delivering them . at the present time my duty has over 700 calls , i work part time .

This is the problem with the D2D (well one of many) Delivery Supplement in the 2010 deal - it can be spun many ways, but who is to say whose interpretation is right and whose is wrong.

The £20.80 is not a d2d supplement. Its a delivery supplement, paid to delivery staff (if the deal is voted in, which is by no means certain).
When a firm like Tesco introduce a new chilled food product to their range, do checkout staff get a separate payment for handling a different product ? Of course not - those staff are using the same skills they are already using to handle all the existing products, and their weekly wage is the payment they get for their time and their skills.
When Ford start manufacturing a new model of car, and there's a lot of people expressing a desire to buy that product, do they put a cap on how many they will sell each day across the UK ? Of course not - they are in business to make a profit. Without profit, the livelihoods of those people they employ would be at best uncertain, and at worst threatened by plant closures.
Forget getting paid separately for d2d items - it was a brilliant piece of negotiating by whoever got that one past RM, but it was always likely to be targeted by RM as something they wanted to do away with, as part of a general pay restructuring. The only relationship the £20.80 has to the pre-2010 situation is that the monies previously used to fund separate d2d payments will now be distributed as a delivery supplement.
If you're the man who's replaced Alan Leighton, and you've come into the business from outside Royal Mail, of course you are going to think it's ludicrous to a) make separate payments for d2d items and b) turn away new customers on the grounds that 'no, thanks, we've had three of those already this week'. Those two things are choking-off growth in perhaps the only area of mailings that does still have potential to grow.
The comparisons between how many items of d2d one walk has, compared to another, are a red herring. If you handle less packets than other walks in your office do, would you say you should get less money per hour ? Of course not. You and every other delivery officer are paid the same hourly rate, and that will continue after this agreement comes in.
But, while we're on the 'fairness' angle, do you think it's right that after this deal comes in, you'll get £1081.60 a year more than me, even though we both work for the same company ?

Re: opt out D2D
Well it happens in every other company. A mail order company tends to pay those taking the orders over the phone more than the warehouse staff packing the orders. (BTW I am not saying that an MC job is on par with a warehouse packer just taking a firm from my own experienceCarnoustie wrote:

I agree people who do the same job in a firm should be paid the same regardless of age, gender race or religion but I also think that some jobs are more difficult to recruit for or to retain people in and if you agree in Market principles as your post suggests, then those same principles must also apply to the jobs within it.

MCs will get a supplement of a minimum of £8 + any PBS they get now over the £8

Re: opt out D2D
I have no issue with the suplement, delivery office based workers will get the same hourly rate for basic pay and supplement. 40 hours work is 40 hours work, we dont all handle the same amount of mail items as our deliveries are in part determined by housing type so why should DTD be any different. At this moment in time all 40 hour delivery workers in a D.O are being paid differing wages for the same hours worked due to pence per item
Where the CWU did go wrong was with the increase to basic pay, that should have beeen high enough in year 1 to offset any losses incurred by the change to a supplement. Sadlly they did not grasp that might be a good idea. I would have thought 3.5 % minium would have been on offer for year 1 as that would be enough to offset the ESA and that would leave £1071.20 a year to counter act the loss of DTD payments.
I dont give a stuff about the mail type I have, a manageable workload with good T's and C's is my main objective within my employment with RML.

Re: opt out D2D
It still does not address the issue of part-time staff working more than their contracted hours (which most of them do) and still being paid the delivery supplement pro-rata,Big Daz wrote:I have no issue with the suplement, delivery office based workers will get the same hourly rate for basic pay and supplement. 40 hours work is 40 hours work, we dont all handle the same amount of mail items as our deliveries are in part determined by housing type so why should DTD be any different. If this agreement is accepted a part-time member can work 40hrs and be paid less than a full-time member working 40hrs...now that IS crazy.
Perhaps an HOURLY supplement paid for the first 40hrs may have been a better direction to go.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share
