If I had my way, nobody would lose their job, ever.motherhubbard wrote:Monday to Friday would at a stroke remove approx 16% of the workforce.frogger wrote:There is no demand for Saturday working at all,and if RM stopped Saturday working they would make all the savings theyve dreamt of,by having no need for rotates etc
Are you prepared to see that many people lose their jobs?
Would you be happy if it was one of you?
Be careful what you wish for.
Unfortunately, we're working for a company that has been shedding jobs for the last 7-8 years, and it has benefitted nobody that is left here picking up the pieces.
Moving to a more sensible, sedate, Mon-Fri, would entail job losses, just as everything else we do to try and avoid a Mon-Fri working week, results in job losses, but at least those colleagues left picking up the slack would see a major benefit, something we haven't seen for a long, long, time.

How will it be more sedate?

These are from the upcoming Conference.motherhubbard wrote:DirtyHarry wrote:Moving to a more sensible, sedate, Mon-Fri,

Can't see them getting far.
127 CATEGORY A: This Conference agrees that the CWU as part of its ongoing strategy for deliveries a referendum is carried out seeking the views of all delivery staff regarding Saturday deliveries. And whether the delivery specification becomes a Monday to Friday service.
The Postal Executive is instructed accordingly.
South East Wales Amal
125 CATEGORY A: This Conference believes that for the vast majority of members, Saturday working is anti-social.Therefore, Conference instructs the PEC to negotiate an agreement with Royal Mail which ensures that:
1. There can be fewer Saturday attendances (for example, with four-dayweeks, or Monday to Friday duties combined with Scheduled Attendance covering Saturdays) and;
2. Attendances on Saturdays can begin earlier, be significantly shorter, and can finish earlier, than attendances on weekdays.
As a minimum, the current terms of the Single Daily Delivery Agreement must be maintained.
These state that:
“Saturday attendances will be significantly shorter than weekday attendances. To assist this Mailsort 3 need not be scheduled for delivery and missort runs should be rescheduled to enable an earlier start on town residential delivery routes”.(SDD Agreement)
Bradford and District Amal
126 CATEGORY A: This Conference agrees that the ongoing CWU strategy in Delivery will be to secure an agreement that provides the option for whole units or areas to introduce Monday-Friday attendances with Saturdays being completed either on overtime or by a separate part-time workforce.
The Postal Executive is instructed accordingly.
Bristol and District Amal

Re: Longer Saturdays with New Agreement!
yes motherhubbard you are right,it will get rid of 16% of the workforce. But what im trying to say is that ,there are going to be some offices and mailing centres closed down anyway and job losses will be inevitable,as the company tries to cut costs.By getting rid of Saturdays, they can save a fortune that way,and hopefully there wont need to be so many closures.I dont know the maths of it all,but surely less people will lose their jobs by cutting Saturday working than if they close the offices and mailing centres.motherhubbard wrote:Monday to Friday would at a stroke remove approx 16% of the workforce.frogger wrote:There is no demand for Saturday working at all,and if RM stopped Saturday working they would make all the savings theyve dreamt of,by having no need for rotates etc

Also M3 on saturdays with the new deal, does it have to go?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

I would imagine so,dingo seems to feel it has more or less been absorbed by DSA but there is still plenty kicking about my office on a saturday. Also M3 on saturdays with the new deal, does it have to go?
A "standardised 6 day workplan" would have to mean M3 would go Mon-Sat ......I think.

Re: Longer Saturdays with New Agreement!
If they could they would close the mail centres AND get rid of 16% of our colleagues.frogger wrote:

Mon-Fri won't mean they won't plough on with the MC rationalisation plan.

Re: Longer Saturdays with New Agreement!
Being devils Advocate here.
The people we call customers are not the same as who RM calls Customers ,or the Ones paying RM the Postage.
RM sees it customers as the big mailing houses and financial institutions etc.
Whilst I agree the people we deliver to do not want most mail on sat ,they do want ,Cheques, giros and their Ebay/Amazon Packets, hospital appointments.
Birthday Cards,etc
Their must be a demand for Sat deliverys ,hence this new product Sat Special D2D as mentioned in this Agreement.
Longer Sat working will cause problems for many and is not wanted by most of the workforce. The soloution I see is 10 hour shifts Tues -Fri ,for as many people who want it as possible and 20hour contracts 2 days a week Sat and Mon for part time staff to cover the days off of full time staff.
Personly I see this as a good compromise ,and think in London They are looking at similar arrangements, and the people I have spoken to think Tues -fri would be good ,also I know people intrested in part time work 2 Days a week.
Every ones a winner .
Now getting into the real world if we have 10 hour shifts Many SA will go.I find it unbeleivable people still get guranteed overtime daily and see it as their right.

So who is going to cover your holidays or if your off sick, or are you planning not to have any other time but Saturday & Sunday off all year long.frogger wrote:yes motherhubbard you are right,it will get rid of 16% of the workforce.

Just how do you see a 10hr shift justified on a tuesday......kendo1 wrote:

Most of the part-timers in my office can't work a 10hr day......that's why they are part-time and most of them are on 25-30hr contracts.
And if your mail aint there until 0600 or later then you will de working until at least 1600 and thats at least 4pm on a saturday for the P/T staff.
Every ones a winner........

I like the cut of his jib! I'm on a 25 hour contract - so put me down for 2 x 12 and a half hour shifts Saturday and Monday - that would be 4 hrs IPS and Prep and a couple of 7 hour deliveries/collections - this job just gets easier by the dayfishtank wrote:Just how do you see a 10hr shift justified on a tuesday......kendo1 wrote:

Hey better still why not employ students just to do Saturday, they are diligent hard workers and would make a real contribution to the business and the rest of us would just work Mon to Fri - may have to work a longer Monday though possibly

The thing to remember is that in the next few years RM will be introducing new revenue streams,
products etc, chances are these will involve more tailored services, i.e Evening PKT bursts, more
SAT work. Face it, Saturdays are here to stay & i have said it before " later starts, Automation,
longer del spans, that is what the future holds. Before everyone starts preaching about the mythical
10 hr day, 4 day week, Think how it fits in with RM's future end game, the business wants either more
outdoor work for F/T employees or alot more P/T people.
