Postman Fred Pattison saves pensioner's life

MODEST Teesside postie Fred Pattison saved the life of one of his customers after finding the pensioner collapsed with a life-threatening diabetic seizure in his driveway.


Now Fred, a former Green Howards Warrant Officer Class 1, of Guisborough, is in line for a national bravery and lifesaving award.

Fred, 61, born in Grove Hill, Middlesbrough, has already been shortlisted for the regional final of the First Class People Awards 2010, which recognises unsung heroes among Royal Mail staff.

Fred said: “It was a bitterly cold day last November. I’ve been a postie in the Guisborough area for 10 years and was just coming down to the Warren Chase area.

“I turned into this drive and saw this man’s body on the floor. I know him well and at first thought he was trying to retrieve something from his garage.

“I shouted his name, but he didn’t reply. I went up to him and he wasn’t moving. I shouted again and there was still no response.

“Then I looked at his head and saw a large bump and blood coming from it and realised he’d had a fall. I shouted again and he responded, but then his body began to shake.

“I knew it was serious. His body was very cold and I realised he needed to be inside his house in the warm.

“So I put him over my shoulder and carried him into his house.”

Fred used cushions to support the man then called paramedics.

“I found a prescription for diabetes which I told them about. The first one that arrived called for back-up and he said it was a serious diabetic seizure. By this time the man was unconscious.”

The man, who doesn’t want to be named, was taken to Middlesbrough’s James Cook University Hospital, where he recovered fully and was discharged after a couple of days.

Fred said: “I’ve seen him since and he thanked me and shook my hand.” Of the award, he said: “I’m glad to be nominated, but I would have done this anyway.”

In a 34-year career in The Green Howards, Fred served with distinction in Germany, Kenya, Panama, Belize, Northern Ireland and Cyprus. He learned basic first aid in the Army.

Fred, who works at Guisborough delivery office on Morgan Drive, will receive £100 for reaching the regional final of the awards.

Alison Wright, Royal Mail’s regional operations director, said: “These are the unsung heroes who we and customers feel deserve extra recognition for their efforts.”

The overall winner, to be announced at a ceremony in London in May, will win a luxury £2,000 family holiday and cash.

Surely any of us would have done what we could to save someone in such circumstances, but for "a national BRAVERY and lifesaving award" I would have thought one might have to go well beyond the call of duty putting oneself at some risk. .
