Yap, yap, yap ... the postman of Balcolyn is a regular victim of the roaming dogs. Source: The Daily Telegraph

IT'S like Cujo ... but about 20 times smaller. A jack russell terrier named Bindi and her two tiny sidekicks don't quite size up to the rabid St Bernard in Stephen King's classic thriller, but neighbours say they are almost as ferocious.

The feisty pooches have been terrorising locals in the quiet Lake Macquarie town of Balcolyn for more than a year, chasing the postman, nipping at children in the street and barking incessantly.

"They are holding the neighbourhood to ransom," said Peter Land, who lives next door.

Like four-legged outlaws, the terriers roam the streets day and night.

Mr Land's wife Maureen said she feared for the safety of her three children whenever they went outside to play. "It's ridiculous - when my daughter walks to school she has to go across the road as far from the house as possible just so they won't attack her," she said.

Lake Macquarie City Council rangers manager Keith Stevenson said the dogs were well-known to ranger patrols and their owner Lynda Bassett-Coogan had been issued with several fines in the past. Rangers have also ordered the dogs be confined to her property.

Despite repeated attempts Ms Bassett-Coogan could not be contacted.
