Drunken dad jailed for opportunistic raid on Netherton post office

A MAN who drunkenly attempted to rob his local post office was jailed for 12 months.

Father-of-two Neil McDonald, 26, had drunk a litre of vodka and taken cocaine when he began to rifle through lottery scratch cards at News Post in Park Lane, Netherton.

Liverpool crown court heard when store owner Manjula Shah challenged him he became aggressive and violent.

Prosecutor Geoffrey Fryar said he stormed round the counter and began to grab bags of coins from the till.

McDonald’s raid only came to an end when shop assistant Philip Lewis came to Ms Shah's rescue.

McDonald, of Lydiate Road, Bootle, fled empty-handed, but was arrested later.

He said he only had a vague memory of being in the shop, but admitted attempted robbery on November 18, last year.

Frank Dillon, defending, told how McDonald had behaved “totally out of character” after going on a drinking binge after an argument with his partner.
