Postman Ray calls it a day

RESIDENTS of Rotherfield Greys collected more than £2,000 for their village postman who has retired.

Ninety people attended a farewell party in the village hall for 67-year-old Ray James, who has been a Henley postman since 1983.

His 31-mile round included Rotherfield Greys, Greys Green, Shepherd’s Green and Broadplatt.

Before that, he was the Queen’s postman, delivering and collecting mail from Windsor Castle, near his home.

The party was organised by Rae Ward, who has lived in Rotherfield Greys for 32 years.

She said: "I sent out letters to people in the village and put a flyer in the parish magazine.

"The response was wonderful. More than 78 families contributed to the £2,153 we gave to Ray. There is enormous respect for Ray in the village. There will never be another like him."

Mr James said: "I was taken aback by the response from everyone.

"The Post Office thinks of the people on my round as customers but I have always thought of them as friends.
