A PENARTH postman has been named one of the best in the UK – scooping a prize for the lucky couple who nominated him.

Dave Martin, 54, was awarded a Royal Mail First Class Award for going the extra mile whilst living and working in his local community.

And as a result, Non and Gwenallt Rees, who live in Penarth Haven, have won a £1,000 prize draw for nominating the popular postie.

Dave, who has been a postman for 15 years, said: “I’m really chuffed by what the customers have said about me.

“It is so nice to be recognised, and for people to make the effort to write in and tell someone about it.

“It gave me a real lift when I got back off holiday this week!”

Customers were invited to write in and say why their postman deserved to be chosen as a First Class Postman in Royal Mail’s annual competition.

More than 20 letters from neighbouring residents were also sent in, all nominating Dave.

Gwenallt, of Penarth Haven, said: “The service he provides is second to none.

"His deliveries are always conducted in the most efficient and caring manner and always courteously and genially.

"Nothing is too much trouble for him in ensuring that we receive a First Class service," added Gwenallt.

"He is an undoubted asset to Royal Mail.”

The couple are not the only ones in the area to consider Dave a worthy contender for Royal Mail’s First Class People Award.

Penarth Delivery Office Manager, Jonathan Windsor, said: “Dave is an excellent and hard-working postman and I am not surprised his customers think so highly of him.

"I have no hesitation in backing their nominations.”

The competition presents nine regional awards, with winners receiving a £500 prize. From the regional finalists, a national winner is chosen in May, with the overall winner of Postman of the Year also being unveiled.

The last guy in my office that was nominated for one of the RM awards was sacked 2 years later
