Trowbridge postal worker is suspended

An employee at Royal Mail’s delivery office in Trowbridge has been suspended following an inquiry into the alleged theft of post.

The worker, who has not been named, was suspended on Friday, following an inquiry into missing post, including an item sent by recorded delivery.

Royal Mail customer Sean Shanahan, 42, of Clarendon Road, Trowbridge, raised the alarm in March after a parcel of clothes he bought off auction website eBay failed to arrive at his home, despite being sent by recorded delivery.

After investigating with the sender, Mr Shanahan was sent a copy of the receipt showing it had been signed for in his name on March 1, but he had never received it.

Despite three initial calls to Royal Mail’s customer service department, no-one called him back until the Wiltshire Times contacted the firm in the middle of March, following which he received an apology and an assurance that the theft and forgery allegations were being investigated. The inquiry has resulted in the suspension on Friday.

Mr Shanahan, who works for Wessex Water, said: “The communication is still quite poor really. I still don’t know what has happened to the parcel or what the latest in the investigation is.

“The only way I got anything done in the first place was talking to the Wiltshire Times.

“If it has happened to me, it could have happened to others. Registered post is supposed to be more secure.

“I have lost a bit of trust in the Royal Mail because this has happened, but also because it was really hard to get anything done about it.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said investigations would continue and the suspended worker would be subject to a final interview.

She said: “A member of staff at Trowbridge Delivery Office has been precautionary suspended pending the outcome of investigations under our Code of Conduct procedures.

“The procedures have been agreed with and endorsed by the Communication Workers Union, and include the right of appeal where appropriate.”

Penalties for breaching a code of conduct can range from a warning to dismissal.

She added that Mr Shanahan would be updated on the investigation as soon as it is concluded.

Don't be so quick to judge, it might have been misplaced somewhere in the callers office and the person has lost the P739.

Then why had someone signed for it in his name? :hmmmm

If the allegations turn out to be true. Then I hope that they break with tradition, and give a lengthy sentence to whoever stole it! :evil/mad :evil/mad

It is possible he has signed for it himself and placed it in a "safe" place.
A stupid thing to do in my opinion but stupidity and dishonesty are not the same thing.

I hadn't thought of that. Hopefully, it'll all come out in the investigation. If you're right, and it's a genuine (albeit stupid) mistake. Then I hope they go easy on the culprit. But if it's proved that he/she stole from the Mail, then we need more than the pathetic "slap on the wrist" that so many get. Not so much to punish them more severely, but more as a serious deterrent to others. Because at the moment, there isn't reallty a deterrent there. :hmmmm
